Current Affairs Aussie referendum

A very small % of the population who already get a disproportionately high amount of assistance were set to be given a blank cheque.

Unsurprisingly it was rejected by a sizeable majority of Aussies.

Most countries around the world would have voted the same.
Nope, that is not even close to what the referendum was about 🤣🤣🤣

But you get to think you sound edgy, so onya mate 👍

The Yes campaign did a poor job of selling the change to most Aussies. Also, given that they, like many others around the world right now, are going through a cost of living crisis the timing of this wasn't great. Many voters have more important things to worry about.

The No campaign kept it simple with the slogan of "If you don't know, vote No". It worked.

Also, implying that someone who is planning to vote No is uneducated, or a racist, probably wasn't the best way to go about persuading them to change their minds.

Finally, I know quite a few Aussies who are neither uneducated nor racists. They have told me many reasons why the people in question aren't entirely blameless where their current situation is concerned. Maybe you should do a bit of research and find out what goes on in some remote Australian communities? It might help you understand why the majority of Aussies aren't that sympathetic to their plight.
Pease, name five reasons why indigenous Australians aren't blameless for their current situation. I live in rural Australia and can confirm that indigenous people have been treated appallingly. Have you heard of the Stolen Generation? Or Myall Creek? Or Pinjarra? Or the Eumeralla 'wars'?

Do you know how many indigenous Australians have been killed in police custody since 1991? 516 according to the University of Melbourne, with four of them being in Youth Detention at the time of their deaths; https://pursuit.unimelb.edu.au/arti...orded Indigenous, four were in youth detention.

35% of indigenous Australians live below the poverty line. In 2023, in one of the richest nations on the planet; https://www.indigenoushpf.gov.au/measures/2-08-income

True. They allowed the scare campaign to dwindle their support from almost 70% down to 40%.

Also true

True. And what a blight it is that it worked. Imagine political leaders telling people to not bother looking for facts, just stay dumb and stay scared. Disgraceful.

At the start of the campaign, support for Yes was at almost 70%. Yes was never campaigning to change peoples minds, but No were deliberately misleading and scaring people into voting no, using a lot of covert racist tropes to achieve it

What are some of these reasons your educated and non-racist friends told you about?

What research have you done in this area? Apart from a couple of educated non-racist friends telling you their opinion?
It might help you understand why the majority of Aussies aren't that sympathetic to their plight.
You are completely wrong here, the overwhelming majority of Australians ARE sympathetic to their plight. As I have pointed out, the initial polls showed 70% in favour of yes. Over the next few months the misdirection and fear campaigns from the No side confused the issues and made it seem like it was about something that it wasn't actually about.

So they are all great people who do no wrong? OK....

So loads of caring Aussies got tricked into voting NO? OK....
