It's funny how even though Howard has broken records at Everton and been consistent throughout making 200+ appearances, he'll probably never be as highly regarded as the likes of Martyn, Southall (no one ever will tbf), etc.

people seem to forget how much the game has changed and the balls have changed since these players. Football is faster, harder, and the ball moves a lot lot more. Its almost saying who would win, Tyson or Muhammad Ail. Howard is a great keeper, as was Southall, but I firmly believe that if Southall played now he would make mistakes due to all these factors

Southall is a legend and a bona fide goalie if there ever was one. But he wasn't really an athlete, he was a bin man ffs. Howard is an athlete. Well-trained, mentally sharper, and with the goalie skills to boot. Challenge him at any other sport he'd do well. I have a suspicion Southall would be terrible at epee fencing.

Reading up on exactly what makes Boruc crazy/fun:
- He's a polish keeper ffs
- Educated a mechanic
- Like Mucha, used to play for Legia Warszawa
- Married his high school sweet heart, had a kid with her, left her for a Polish Pop Idol contestant 6 months after the kid's birth.
- The pop idol contestant became pregneant with a new kid like less than a year later.
- Saved a highly pregneant woman and a guy from the attack of hooligans on the streets of glasgow once. ha.
- Once suspended from the national squad for going out drinking in Amsterdam.
- Once suspended from the national squad for acting rude and arrogant to the crew on an airplane.
- Scottish tabloids once paparazzi'd him with a woman claiming he was having an affair with. This woman was his sister.
- News of the world had to pay him £70k in a libel case for similar behaviour, appearantly some sort of scottish record.
- As a polack and massive catholic, he sparked massive rows between celtic and rangers for crossing himself in front of the rangers fans.
- Which i personally find pretty interesting. Historically, Everton is the catholic's club as well. Figures it would add up, like.

As for his play, i've not seen him enough to make up a valid effort. Seen him pull of some amazing saves on youtube and all that, but it's all old news. He's still playing a lot, but appearantly with less bravado in Serie A. Probably doesn't fit to be our backup - he'd be starved for attention. Also, seems like a slightly too-old part of the polish goalie bloodline: Dudek - Boruc - Fabianski - Sczesny - Taudul is how this one rolls.

The footy blog DirtyTackle have a pretty humorous ongoing segment about a fictionalized Artur Boruc as well.

Thats one of the wrongest comments ive possibly ever read on here.

I find it hard to believe anyone who watched Nev play over the years could possibly have that opinion.

It wasnt like he played in the stone age, he played in 95, his opposite no being Scmicheal and he was prob our best player that day, Giggs, Scohles and the Nevilles were in that Utd team/squad and Giggs and Neville are still playing.

Hmm the fact that NOW had to pay 70k in libel may negate an awfull lot of the headlines you posted above mate. He would improve us tbh, Howard would prob have a fight his hands which wouldnt be a bad thing, be interesting to see could he up his loevel of performence.

I disagree with the extreme hyperbole of your first sentence here. Naturally, i'm not ignorantly saying "guys back there were part-time idiot amateurs" - of course not! The comment is in general athletic aptitude between the two physichally in terms of upbringing.

Howard has been trained from day 1, with a genuine sports talent and scholarships since his teens, headhunted early and brought over the atlantic in order to be a goalie for man u after starting out in the MLS aged 18.

Southall was a massive talent and is still my favourite player ever but he was just there, ekeing out a career in local clubs before gaining a place in Bury's lineup when aged 23. No scholarships, just honest work, but also more raw talent and strength of reactions than actual proffesional athleticism. You could also tell from the way he handled his post-playing life that the professionalism is an issue, heh.

These drinking stories are bull****. He never was in good relationship with Smuda (our national team manager, real bellend if you ask me) and he (Smuda) was looking for excuse to rule him out of the team.

Although Boruc has a terrific character as a footballer, great attitude when in the first team and also a leader. But when he's not 1st keeper he become a real devil.

Hope we sign him. I'm a Rangers fan, but it'll be nice to see a polish lad in EFC shirt :)

Sorry neiler, I actually agree with this view (and we are welcome to our opinions). I think I've even heard big nev imply this same idea before. I have no source, memory is vague on this. Does not take anything away from all he did and is to our club. The game has changed a lot since '95, especially for keepers. Back then the strong enforcer was in. Today, the tall quick agile elite athlete is the most successful and in demand. The ball is more lively, rules protect keepers a little more, the game evolves, there is nothing wrong with that.

And after rereading my comment, i think i should clarify something. I think I heard nev mention something about the game evolving, not him comparing his athleticism against Howard's.

I watched an interview with him once and he said the physios then said he could eat whatever he wanted. He'd have full English breakfasts before games.

With the boom of sport science and the like there's no question footballers nowadays are far better athletes. Tim Howard is 10x the athlete Nev ever was. But I'd still have an 80s Nev between the sticks now. His weaker athleticism is almost irrelevant as he was a far superior keeper in every way.
