Im sick of the Mucha hate now!

Hes not a bad keeper at all. Its hard to come in after a year out (which is what his Everton career has basically been) and be 100% on your game.

As back up goalies go he is one of the better ones.

True, I mean, his confidence must be very low. When that happens, you are more liabile to mistakes and with goalkeepers, those mistakes are magnified by 100. Imagine when he makes one during a rare call-up to the first team everyone gets on his back and he ends up looking like the poorest goalkeeper around? Thats hardly going to boost him. I'm not syaing we should cheer him for a mistake but only after a more decent run in the first team does it breed consistency, particularly for goalkeepers.

Imagine if we dropped Howard after one his (now rare, thankfully) fumbles? He has said himself how, naturally, that would dent his confidence on its own. Then imagine being dropped on top of it, you can only imagine what that would do to him.

As for Howard, at Utd he was dropped the odd time and was more error prone in resulting games he did play. Just remember back to watching him play back then, how many of us would have said, theres a really great goalkeeper? Not a huge amount if we're honest. There was much head scratching as to what Alex Ferguson even saw in him. But he did see something and he was right. What he was wrong about was exactly the same thing many of you would do to Mucha if he was number 1 and if you were the manager. He lost patience, dropped him and sold him.

For us, Howard's constant run in the team has bred the confidence and consitency we see now.

When Mucha originally signed, he was probably told he would have to fight for first place but even counting for that, it would
be natural in the back of his mind to be expecting a little bit more than being a bench warmer and just appearing in the Carling Cup. Especially since he was highly rated at Legia Warsaw (no matter what the quality of the league), and he was then, as he is now, the Slovakian national team's number 1.

Essentially, we cannot judge this guy without a more concerted run in the first team. Unfortunately for him Howard has been excellent and you cannot justify dropping him but on the proviso that Mucha was picked for a more constant run and he keeps on making mistake after mistake then, perhaps we can say yes, he may not be any good for us. But just now, we cannot and lets not contribute to the guys poor confidence levels anymore with this negativity.

As for Boruc, if we can get him for decent wages, then go for it. If he kicks up, no better man than Moyes to deal with him. Better than Gordon any day.

I would love Boruc in the squad. I also reckon if he got a run in the team he would win over the fans very quickly with his eccentric personality.

However, if Tim keeps sharp, I am happy for him to stay 1st choice.

As a Rangers fan it's never nice to see a former Celtic player join my first club.

But we need additonal cover for goalkeeper, it's not like we can rotate players around. (Jagielka played in goals a few times though, that's worth a mention)

Don't worry mate you'll get over it.

I have happily welcomed Gough, Dunc, Jelly and now Naismith - if they do their stuff for the Royal Blue jersey I don't care what their previous history was!!

Never liked Wally though !!

Howard is a quality keeper. Prone to the odd error but then so are most keepers these days. It's no surprise that we are seeing more "errors" as the ball keeps going through technological revolutions which makes it fly faster and in all kinds of weird directions. Also, players are fitter and stronger so kick the ball harder and the technology of the boot means there is more grip on the ball.

The thing with Howard is that he makes saves when a goal seems certain. Great shot stopper. Apart from Hart and Krul, I don't see many other keepers in the PL I would prefer.

Anyway, I agree stronger back up should be sought. Mucha is an awful keeper

There was no such thing as a 'short pass' under Smith.

Beaut of the highest order that man, I love him to bits but I'm glad we sacked him at the right moment.

everyone's entitled to their own opinion but i don't rate him as high as that sorry. great shot stopper yes, but he's prone to errors that other keepers don't make. all of them can make mistakes with the ball swerving, you could sort of say that for the villa goal, but that was more to do with howard moving the wrong way to start with, was left flat footed. also that mistake against wigan last season from the neville OG was terrible, as well as the one vs blackburn on the opening game a few years back.

as well as the two you mention, vorm is better than him, lloris and friedel (maybe even cudicini?), mignolet i quite rate, cech is nowhere near his best but still better than howard, al habsi is better and then there's keepers like given and reina who have declined rapidly in the last year who i would have placed above him before.

If he's fit and on form it wouldn't be long before he was 1st choice keeper. I never seen much of him in Italy but if he took Freis spot in goals he must have been decent.
