Should I just copy my review of Chelsea and Spurs and substitute the team names for Arsenal because it's beginning to become predictable going into away match days at the supposed bigger teams; impress throughout but then be killed off for a lack of conviction and cutting edge.
I thought today we weren't as good as we were against Spurs or Chelsea but once again we showed a real lack of conviction and we couldn't quite find that killer pass or finish off the opportunities at our disposal. I thought today the best team won but it could have easily (and perhaps should have) been our day, if it wasn't for not providing anything from the flanks bar a couple of jinking runs from Baines down the left.
Mirallas and Pienaar haven't had bad campaigns but in recent weeks, I think their performances have been questionable at the very least. Martinez left the subs too late for me to make an impact and I was surprised to see Osman introduced with so little time left; he's a nice, tidy footballer but is he going to provide the magical spark with 15 minutes to go to get us through?
People will highlight the Barkley chance as the moment but for me, the biggest chance fell to Lukaku in the first half. A great run but with his head down, he had no idea that to his right and to his left were the likes of Barkley and Mirallas to finish off a great counter attack but inexperience told.
The keeper, Joel, is questionable to say the very least. I think the team missed Jagielka's stewardship and courage today, although I thought Stones was comfortable and assured but going back to Robles, I just felt nervous every time the ball was hurled into the box. He looks very much out of his depth and I think he'll be warming the substitute's bench from now on, should Howard complete the season injury free.
But on the whole, the overriding emotion one of disappointment. I had a feeling we'd compete and we did that, yes, but it's beginning to feel like same old, same old now when we're away. The approach is easy on the eye and I love the confidence and assurance we seem to have in possession but for crying out loud can we test the keeper a bit more or find someone who can in a good position, rather than shift Lukaku out to the flank, away from Mertesacker who he troubled all game. Since the Sunderland game, we haven't been quite ourselves; we haven't looked as if we can hold out teams as comfortably as we did earlier in the season, we've lost the driving runs from McCarthy, we've lost the threat of Mirallas and the creativity of Pienaar and we've lost incision and potency in the final third.
Come on Everton, we're out the cup now, we've got our starting 11 in the place bar Jagielka and we've got Gooners, Rent Boys, United and City coming up at Goodison now. We've got our forward back scoring and we've got games coming up which we have to win to stand any chance of any European qualification.
No trophy but the players will have learnt the harshness of the way that we play; we'll get punished if we don't show composure. This is where we find out about Bobby and this Everton; this is where we see the resilience and quality which this side have got in abundance. This is where we push on; there's still Europe to play for and let's give it a right good go! We didn't deserve 4-1 but we didn't deserve a win either; come on Everton, wakey, wakey, rise and shine. You've been sleeping for a bit and you've been woken up today and you better get up and do something about it and I hope, like us all, that you do it and you finish this season as strongly as you started it.
Sorry for the cheese but this is the time where we see Everton come to the fore and Martinez as our manager.
Allez allez oh...
