Are we stronger than last season?

Stronger in defence and midfield but weaker in attack we have enough to get to January when we can look again at what the squad needs its down to the manager to get the best from what he has upto then.

Not good enough; shouldn't have relied on the Barkley money funding a new striker

Personally i think the 'we needed the Barkley cash to buy' is a red herring. Perhaps it could be we needed his wages off the payroll. (has his improved contract been taken off the table? We sign a 100k + a week forward and then Barkley accepts the contract and perhaps that blows the budget etc.) However rumours persist we would have got Giroud had his missus given the green light.

People were saying the exact same thing last year and we spent a fair whack in Jan still without selling.

I agree with the not good enough as i'm sure most would. If we were able to get a top striker/defender then we might have been pushing for the top 4. But it is easy saying it and a bit harder executing, the RS missed out on their top targets too, Chelsea? Nada. Arsenal, got a striker and nothing else.

A good striker should have been a serious priority though, and we needed backups when our main targets failed. We buy many attacking midfielders & spend £45m on Sigurdsson, not having a target man for him to set up is just silly

To be honest i think only Man United really sorted themselves out, even City i dont think fully addressed there problems at the back

Don't disagree, to most that is where we should have started. (Perhaps we needed to show improvements though to try and go after the names we wanted) But that in itself should mean we had the cash to get a forward in, as surely Koeman would have been told you can have Sigurdsson but that will be it, to which you'd think the reply would be 'give that a miss and buy a striker instead'.

We probably had backups but after Giroud, maybe Costa's agent spun us a line that he was seriously considering a years loan to us, then withdraws, if rumours are correct we wanted to go for Perez and then Jimenez but they failed. At which point down the list do you have to say well it's not much better than what we already have and give them the opportunity to see if they can lead the line.

It's all smoke and mirrors when it comes to transfers nowadays.

We're prob stronger in nearly every position on the pitch apart from a striker and have more depth of quality to the squad but I think losing lukaku killed any chance we had of achieving anything of note in the league.

If we couldn't find a striker in his window, I cant see us getting one in January. More likely is that moshri /board see what we have now as enough. Trying to save money for the stadium and thinking that the 45m or so net spend is already too much /enough.

In an ideal world we would have got a striker, LCB and LB. We didn't do we go with what we got. I think Rooney and Sandro will get 22-25 league goals between them. I think the attacking midfielders will score more than last season so we'll end up with approaching 70 goals. I also think if Pickford and Keane stay fit we will concede 5-10 less. This should see us get an extra 10 points and we'll be right amongst top 4 battle. We also then get the opportunity to bring the players needed in during January and hopefully by then all our new signings will be gelling and it will give us fresh impetus!!
