Are Everton Still A Big Club ?

It's a hard thing to measure.

I also think there's a distinction between real fan base and glory hunting fans.

You look at the amount of new City supporters have popped up in the last few seasons, same since Spurs have started finishing top 6.

I agree with this I read a lot of other clubs forums and one word you see a lot of on liverpool websites is "wool", there is a distinction between local and global support and I don't know whether it's good or bad.

Arguably locals like me are stuck in the past whereas new fans provide a different perspective (I admit they sometimes drive me mad) but they might be right.

Regarding local support, it may be in hibernation, but it's there - huge in the north west - in that respect we are a big club.

In everything else we are not, IMO the Anfield derby and second half capitulations against a poor liverpool just confirmed our mentality is one of a small club.

NO

I guess i'd say:

United
Liverpool
------
Chelsea
Arsenal
------
Everton
Spurs

I don't know where to put City purely because they're a total anomaly but in terms of current exposure they'd have to be in the top tier.

There's only 3 genuine big clubs in England at the moment for me - United, Arsenal, RS. That's fan base and success over decades.

Everyone else are great pretenders that will have their day but wont be there long term - Chelsea, Citeh etc.

But modern footy is basically on a short term cycle where spending power equals MASSIVENESS and the odd trophy here and there.

Compared to the top 4/5 yes, but them clubs tend to have alot of 'glory hunting' support - if we were to start challenging for trophies year in year out then our fan base would increase, in the same manner that City's & Chelsea's have since they came into money. In terms of our core fan base (i.e. match going fans & local support) id say our fan base is a decent size

Most clued up real football fans know that Everton ARE a big club with great and consistent none Gloryhunter / JCL support

I dont want this to sound sycophantic but this comes from my personal experience

Some of ours make me sick mate

That said we have always has some great support when a lot of locals couldnt be arsed ( Cockney reds in the eighties for example)

We play in the top league of English football, one of if not the biggest leagues in the world, where we regularly finish in the top ten, with a history that favourably compares to most clubs in the world.

We're definitely a big club. We're just not what under a modern definition you'd call a massive club.

i can remember leeds utd were 1 of the biggest clubs in the land if not the biggest ,look at them now

Rich seems to translate to 'big' these days as City as so sadly about to prove.

Personally wouldn't class City as a big side though.

Spot on. Fellers I know who support other clubs we're brought up in the late 70's and 80's still label Everton as a big club.

It depends on who Everton are compared with. Man Utd/City, Arsenal , Rs , Chelsea are the "big" clubs if you think of finance and worldwide fanbase. Don't Everton have fans all over the world ? As the GOT membership shows. Maybe not as many as those other clubs ( with the exception of Man City) but still quite a few I should imagine. We have a large stadium which gets good crowds each home game. Now compare Everton to, say, Blackpool.
