I think blocking Burnham's application to stand will have done the Labour party even more harm. The Starmer faction in the Exec have shown their hand. What Starmer said about a mayoral election if he was allowed to stand, and all the complications that come with that (i.e there would no longer be a Labour Mayor there after a new one was voted in) was a load of rubbish. Fear of a leadership challenge, that is what drove the refusal to let him stand. Voters aren't thick. I believe there will be even more not voting Labour now. Unfortunately, since coming to power (and I've voted Labour all my life), this Labour Government has lurched from one cock-up to another, and this Burnham debacle is just the latest. A hell of a lot of Labour MPs should be looking for a new job now, because after the next election, they'll be unemployed...

…..just wonder if Burnham knew his application would be knocked-back, he might just be playing a blinder. As far as PLP is concerned, there is a focus on Wes Streeting in any leadership battle but I wouldn’t underestimate Shabana Mahmood being a player.

Hopefully Streeting will defect to Reform, he is a stain on the party - which is a pretty impressive thing to be these days

How many more nails does the coffin for Labour's next election challenge need?

Keir: I have plenty more, so let's keep hammering them in.
