2020/21 Andre Gomes

He passes forward, carries forward and as we've seen with him playing RWB he will work. I mean if you're ok with Gomes in central midfield than Iwobi can't be an issue when the other team has the ball.
Think we're gonna have to agree to disagree. Iwobi doesn't look good at football to me. Acts like he's under intense pressure when he's got time on the ball

My only concern with Iwobi playing centrally is turnovers. If he could adjust and not give the ball away he's got everything else.

I really do think he's a better defensive player than Gomes though so it is something to think about.

I feel like he's being used wrongly. I think having Allan and Doucoure behind him, getting the ball and then spraying it forward would be good for him.

He's really not that mobile otherwise.

Not sure he's got that in his game mate.

He very rarely looks for a penetrating ball. He's not really someone who finds assists is he? How many of those has he had for Everton?

People say he's "an engine" "he brings balance" - but for me he doesn't get on the ball enough to do either of those.

I'm like a stuck record with him, but again - for me, he doesn't offer enough on the ball to be such a liability off the ball. Our midfield is too passive to have Rodriguez and Gomes (or Sigurdsson). Allan isn't enough - I'm unsure what Doucoure does, yet.

This is a big problem with this Everton team;

Opposition midfielders must be made up against him.

The answer on assists is 3, but it is even less impressive than that figure. His first was a league game against Watford on a goal that Walcott should have been flagged offside for in the build up, the second a pass into Richarlison who scored from a keeper error and 30 yards out against Millwall and the most recent a nothing cross that Walcott somehow looped over the keeper in the restart vs Villa.

Taking out his time in Portugal he has 15 assists in 200 or so matches. When you factor in how bad he is defensively that's a pretty big issue.

Well that's a slightly different argument. He's as good as any of the other options we have currently, i'll give him that.

When I look at this squad and think who would be retained in a top 4 team of 2022/2023, Gomes is in there. Not starting 11, but worth something off the bench.

I think we are all too comfortable leaping on individuals for lacking this, not showing that etc etc. However, and especially in midfield, you are only as good as the players around you and the system you play in. I see enough in Gomes to see that he has the essential qualities to be a premiership midfielder - he's tall, he can spray it off both feet, and he's got great eyes.

Not sure I'd read much into a goals and assists record for Gomes. He's largely been deployed as holding midfielder in a double pivot for the last three years and he's been supplying the likes of Beo Wombrott and Cenk Tosun. Can't exactly bank on them finishing a half chance can you.

His game is the pass before the pass, collecting it off the ball winning 6 and shooting it into wide areas or the number ten. Reminds me a bit of the Moutinho role for Wolves

Has anyone in our side got a decent goals and assists record for the last three years? Genuine question.

And don't say Gylfi Sigs. Please no

The team looks better when he plays, fact. He is in our top 11 outfield players, fact. Should start every game he is fit, fact.

And, yes, for those of you who are watching highlights of Europe's best teams each week, he isn't up to that standard. Yes he can be quite immobile, and yes he can foul, and yes he is inconsistent, and yes he's not as good Nico Barella or Houssem Aouar. But ffs if that's your frame of reference, you may as well give up on the team this season.

He brings balance to the team, is a good passer of the ball with both feet, and when he is on form (such as Spurs first game of the season) he can dominate that left side of midfield.

Pretty obvious imho
Yes

The problem is if he's being a holding midfielder he needs to defend at a certain level and I don't think he reaches that. You compare him to Moutinho but Joao is undeniably more creative in the final third and is better without the ball to boot.

You're right we don't have many players with good assist records but I'm not really sure that helps Andre. We just have a team lacking creators and he is a part of it too.

It’s all opinions but not for me. He’s a talented player but I can’t blame his teammates for him not being able to tackle or pass. He’s a passenger about 75% of the time and the other 25% he’s just neat and tidy. If he could find the form he showed when he first came in I’d agree with you but it’s been 2 years since he showed that level in consecutive games, that just isn’t good enough for me.

Iwobi would be interesting in that position if he could carry on his current form. Any time he’s started somewhere other than RB/RWB recently he’s stunk the place out. Which is insane when you think about it.
