The team looks better when he plays, fact. He is in our top 11 outfield players, fact. Should start every game he is fit, fact.

And, yes, for those of you who are watching highlights of Europe's best teams each week, he isn't up to that standard. Yes he can be quite immobile, and yes he can foul, and yes he is inconsistent, and yes he's not as good Nico Barella or Houssem Aouar. But ffs if that's your frame of reference, you may as well give up on the team this season.

He brings balance to the team, is a good passer of the ball with both feet, and when he is on form (such as Spurs first game of the season) he can dominate that left side of midfield.

Pretty obvious imho

Much better performance from him when he came on. He also allows Doucoure to get further forward when we're playing in a 3.

His goal and assist return though is tragic. Needs to contribute more on that side of things as his defensive qualities don't paint him in the greatest light.

I think we do have to note that his bounce back came against the least competitive midfield in the league. Chelsea and the opponents following will not be as accommodating and it isn't complete fiction to think he might not be up for it.

But so many times he is a complete passenger. He´s not found himself out of the starting XI through bad luck. To say this type of player should start every game demonstrates why yet again we are going to be struggling to make the top 10.

In an ideal world Gomes is a squad player that is chomping at the bit to come on and make a difference. In the current world even on one leg he’s a better option than Sigurdsson Delph or Davies, or whichever centreback we throw into a back three to get rid of the third midfielder position.

He’s our best option at the moment and hopefully starts against Chelsea. In top form he’s good enough for us but we’ve not seen that for a long time now.

Completely agree. The likes of Sigurdsson, Delph and Davies are practically deadwood that shouldn´t be in the squad. You get the feeling with Gomes that he´s the type of player who responds to others playing well around him. The problem is that in our system the onus is on him to get us ticking.

None of those are facts. Fact.

He has, to an extent, been Sussed. In his first season he was great, but, teams have now worked out that he wants too much time on the ball, if you give him room and time he is very good. If, however, you press him and give him no time he struggles.

Anyone else who you think would offer more in a CM three?

Who else would you start ahead of him in a midfield three?
