in the 4 league games Gomes started in that third midfield position we won 3 and drew one. The three other games after he hasn’t started three of them and started one effectively playing on the wing. We lost three and only won v Brighton in a game most felt we never really had control in midfield. It’s obviously not a simple direct correlation in any way but for all those now calling Gomes useless there was nothing wrong in my view with his performances against Spurs, WBA, Palace, and whilst he wasn’t that good against Liverpool we didn’t get dismantled against a far better team in the way we have in the three losses since to average opposition.

He was awful against Newcastle out of position (so was everyone) and hadn’t been good coming off the bench. But he’s been nowhere near as bad as Siggurdson over the course of the season who has been completely and utterly useless in every single minute he’s played. The drop off in our performance against Spurs when Gomes went off and Siggurdson came on told you everything about the level the two were at then. Gomes can get back to that form, Sigurdsson will never be capable of it because he’s an imposter of a footballer.

And his contribution was what? This is Gomes in a nutshell, does nothing, gets bypassed easy but for once doesn't have stinker and gets "Nothing wrong" with his performance. His play is 5 out of 10 paths most games its a 1.
As for the Derby he was appalling, he give the ball away, constantly putting us under pressure.
Not sure why you are comparing him to Gylfi, they are both dreadful players, like saying ww11 was better than ww1

Interesting points mate, but honestly how many of those first 4 games were down to Gomes? I mean is there a causation/correlation debate here?

I am not running the guy down at all. He was ok at Spurs and Palace I felt (but still within himself). However compared to even 80% of his best still some way off. I'd like to see him and Doucoure swap roles. Doucoure to press higher and him to try and sit deeper and dictate play a bit next to Allan, but also be encouraged to break with the ball from deep. I'd give Doucoure afreer role.

However our loss of form to me is about losing, Digne, James, Coleman, Richarlinson while players such as Allan at times have looked to be carrying a knock. I dont think a lack of Gomes has really been instrumental.

Gomes is only good enough as a squad player lets be honest.

If we could land Isco then he'll be on the bench going forward.
Why would he go forward on the bench when he doesn't on the pitch?

Honestly though, it brings me no satisfaction in saying I think he's rubbish at the moment. Hope he gets over what is holding him back, be it mental or physical or whatever. I think he may be better off elsewhere now. Might be better off in Spain or Italy or similar.

It’s like an infectious disease with our midfielders. Something turns them into crabs that can’t run or pass. Feels like we need to bin every single player and sterilise the training ground and buy a whole new squad. Feels like a mentality thing that they adopt here.

It’s so weird isn’t it, the last midfielder we had that actually linked up play with the forwards was Barkley. Not asking for a world beating playmaker, just someone that will occasionally break forward and offer a contribution. Sigurdsson under Silva doesn’t count because he essentially played as a striker that season.

If we could hire Moyes as a main scout and adviser in transfers we would be winning the league with Carlo in charge and all that money. (Of course moyes wouldn’t) but would be a great combination.

Moyes would never go for a player who wouldn’t give everything. Do the dirty stuff and get forward when an attacks is on and kill themselves to get back of the attack breaks. All the while having a standard of quality. The gutless performances our lions churn out regularly if they did that in a previous era they would be giving away in the January transfer window as an example. We award contracts when they have a freak decent game.

Sections of the Barca fan base weren’t convinced.

maybe he’s just not very good?

This is very true.

Just to add to @Saint Domingo's point.

Gomes has played five games this season. He hasn't come off the bench (maybe that sums his limitations up as he's not exactly someone whose turned to when we're chasing a game) at all.

Those first games he was fine. Nothing wrong with his performances.

Got rattled in the derby and didn't look fit. Liverpool's midfield were all over ours though and let's face it that game is where our problems really started to hit home.

We obviously need better in the long term - a player for that role who is more creative than Gomes and offers us that extra 5-10 goals a season.

Doucoure, on the other side, should be offering more goal threat that and we need to start pushing him up the pitch.

Gomes does help us hang onto the ball better in midfield, though. And we don't really have another player that does that in there at the moment.

Mental health issues over there didn't help
