If only Son hadn’t gone for that dirty revenge challenge. Ruined our André he has.
He didn’t, the truth is he really wasn’t that good to begin with. Strangely he seemed to be the pundits favourite always cooing about his silky footballing skills whilst ignoring the lack of end product and professing he would be ‘some player’ once he had time to adapt to the Premiership. This sadly convinced many that Gomes was indeed a talent, sadly it would seem he isn’t.

He obviously does have talent. Takes more than just talent though.

Said about Gomes in Barcelona, and can be said about him now (Although we compare him to Phil Neville):

His playstyle over the last two seasons can be described as conservative.

The nature at which he played lacked the creativity and stylistic approach that one would expect from a Barcelona midfielder. Xavi and Andres Iniesta made a career of controlling games with their ability to create multiple goal-scoring chances per game while having the ability to dictate games on their own.

In contrast, Gomes’ slow-paced and cautious style became counterproductive to the flow of Barca’s style. He rarely had a feel to the game and often became isolated when the team had possession in the opponent’s half. His inability to make long runs on the pitch and push the ball upfield with through balls to open up defenses over time became a frustrating aspect of his play. Gomes was also prone to turnovers and losing possession in crucial moments as he struggled to combat high press tactics.

If opponents stand off him and give him time he is very good. Unfortunately, he has been sussed, most teams know that he always needs that bit too long on the ball and pressure him. If he was playing in a slower league he could be a very good player, as he is undoubtedly very skillful, however, in our league he will only ever be ok.

Interesting. I always say he's got lots of ability and just can't get the consistency, but when you read that it kind of makes you think maybe he lacks the ability, and the good games are actually the anomaly.

His form has been hugely disappointing considering he has some better players around him now. He's to shift a couple more gears at least.

I mean, he's played five games this season.

V Spurs, West Brom and Palace he was part of a fully functioning good team. He played fine.

Liverpool he was poor - the whole midfield was - in the first half. He improved in the second but his passing was dreadful.

The only awful game he's had is Newcastle, and in that game we didn't have our two best full-backs, or Richarlison or James.

Well, I do not know. From what I have seen and read, I do not think we can expect Gomes to perform at a high level over time. If he is also sensitive to pressure, then it is not a psychological advantage. But I'm not a well paid scout either.
