2020/21 Andre Gomes

Doesn't score , 1 goal since he joined
Barely tackles
2 assists in 2.5 seasons
Has no pace
Gets bypassed easy
Has no defined position, too slow for defence and offers little creativity in attack.

I love Gomes and rate him big style, but when you look at his stats I do wonder if I've been looking at him through Gomes tinted specs. I still think there is a boss player there though and we'll see it soon... hopefully.

I've never had Gomes tinted glasses. Wasn't really bothered on signing him after his loan. I know a lot of people liked him but I always thought he went missing. Granted he had a couple of good games at Goodison when he first played. Looked a lovely passer of the ball. Had a great game in the Anfield Pickford derby. But even before his injury he looked very slow(which he still is) and too often went missing in games(which he still does).
Big disappointment. Id love him to consistently play like he did in that Anfield derby bth he is a very very average player at this time

Good point. That bracket of player can sometimes wield bargains but more often than not, the best players are over 35 million. You can see what a difference having just one quality player can make in James. It's far more beneficial to buy a 50 million player than 2 x 25s. We know the recruitment has been far too inconsistent over the last few years and we seem to be adding more to the miss column. Mina and Gomes are in there for me.

Even just a couple, of instances, like a top £50m player instead of klassen and Bolasie for example and we'd be laughing. Obviously not getting europe hinders us, but i now feel with ancelotti and usmanov, we could target almost anyone. We have to go for a couple of players in jan, you look at the impact of bruno fernandes, there's nothing stopping us finding a player like that at a club like sporting.

Same, stats don't say everything though, he is a player to provide the link between midfield and attack, but when we also have doucoure and allan doing that, maybe we do need a tad more creativity. We didn't expect him to be a goal scorer/assister when we got him.

I was going to say, he plays CM. We atr not expecting a lot of goals and assists from him. I still back him in that 433, at least until we find someone better. Right now, Siggy and Delph are worse. He has to play.

Although I agree his stats don't look great.

He's very much not a stat player, when on form you can see exactly why Barca bought him and why we turned his loan permanent.

The only thing we need to worry about is why he is so inconsistent, if gomes turned his 1 in 8 games performances into say 6 in 8 games he'd still be at barca

Gomes played on the left of a 3 with Digne at Left Back & Richarlison further wide works very well as witnessed in the Spurs game and the unbeaten run after it.
Disruptions with Digne & moreso Richarlison out and he has struggled.

He's overcome a career threatening injury and I believe there's still a very good player there. Been tough to watch lately but wasnt it the same for Seamus after his injury .
It took a long time but he's been fantastic of late & I wont be writing Gomes off like some on here are.
I won't write him off because it's clear that he has a huge amount of ability, and if he ever manages to make it click then he'll be a terrific player. The injury is a smokescreen though, because this is exactly what he was like before it. Here's a selection of comments from his thread in the week before his injury:

"Is he drunk? terrible"

"Awful again from this clown"

"Pathetic"

"Looks a shadow of the player we have seen in the past."

"Got his move , now downed tools"

"Rolls Royce of a player but someone has taken the engine out and weighed it in for scrap"

"Been awful past few weeks"

As someone said above, it seems like there's always an excuse for him. The injury, he can only play with Richarlison and Digne, the other midfielders aren't good enough, he needs to play in a 3, neither defending or attacking are his game so he should be just left to stroll around passing the ball a few times a game and be lauded for it, he's tired etc etc.

Like others on here I won't be writing Gomes off just yet. He might ( i stress might) just become the player that we all want him to be.
But we don't need passengers on saturday. We have enough already.
Gomes won't be missed if he is as reported not available.
He's been woeful in recent weeks. As have many others.
But enough is enough. Just one of our awful midfield from last season should now be in our first eleven. And when Don Carlo has another TW to get in hopefully a few more midfielders, then the rubbish from last season is consigned to the bench. Then hopefully transferred out.
Gomes imo deserves a squeak of a chance. Let's see if he can get back to some sort of form. I don't think that he will........but let's see.
No surprise really that we haven't won a football match when Richarlson is out. And we then call on Gomes.....Siggy......Iwobi......Delph......Bernard to step up and do the business. When have these guys ever done the business?

He just is mentally weak I'm afraid

I completely agree - has the talent, but his mental fragility gets in the way.

I feel this was already evident, but the injury has really exacerbated it. His ability to go into his shell, or be passive, just shows that he is a confidence player and when the going gets tough, he never fights through it, only shrinks.

When has he ever put us on his back when we have gone down a goal - genuinely can't remember if its ever happened.

For mine, he has been the biggest disappointment of this season. I remain a fan, but think we may have gone past him.

He wasn't bad at all in the first few games. We missed him in that Brighton game, for example.

He was really bad in the derby and the match the other day.

No excuses, he's just in poor form. But those first three matches - Palace especially - he was pretty good.

Lets hope it clicks then.

A stats website I look at uploaded 2020-21 data and the good news is that Andre has not been the worst tackling midfielder in the top 5 leagues by their numbers so far this year! The bad news is instead his interceptions have gotten worse and now he's last in that.
