It’s like an infectious disease with our midfielders. Something turns them into crabs that can’t run or pass. Feels like we need to bin every single player and sterilise the training ground and buy a whole new squad. Feels like a mentality thing that they adopt here.
I know what you mean but someone posted something about his time at Barcelona a couple of days ago, and the comments about him there were very very similar to what we see here. It appears that it's just the way he plays.

Sections of the Barca fan base weren’t convinced.

maybe he’s just not very good?

He happened to be playing when I went to see Barcelona live in early 2018, and I can understand why their fans were disappointed if they were expecting a replacement for Xavi or Iniesta. At the time, I took him for an understudy to Busquets, as his game seemed to be sitting deep and recycling possession.

Unfortunately, I don't think that he's ever going to thrive in that role in the Premier League, where plenty of otherwise successful registas have found themselves constantly harried out of games. It takes the instant, wide-ranging passing of a Fabregas, Scholes or Alonso, or the physicality of a Moussa Dembele, to get by as a deep-lying playmaker here, and I think he's closer to Borja Valero or Roque Mesa than any of those I've just mentioned.

I'd still keep him in the team until someone better can be brought in, but the only way I see him staying on beyond the summer is if there are Europa League group stage commitments on the schedule.

People forget that under Marco Silva, with Gylfi Sigurdsson ‘playing’ ahead of him (aka doing nothing), Gomes and Gueye went to Anfield against a side murdering everyone at the time and he was the best midfielder on the pitch and even had Carragher praising him through gritted teeth. Even on his comeback from injury he looked the best player on the pitch at the Emirates.

That’s the level he can get to. If we get him anywhere near back to that he’s a very very good player.

Nobody forgets that. Literally nobody. The game at anfield is basically the only reason he hasn’t been hounded the way schneiderlin, sigurdsson etc have been. The problem is, that game was 2 years ago and we’re still harking back to it as the go to example of him having a good game.

Big if that.

Fair enough he was excellent at Anfield in that game, but being honest he can’t live on one two games out of maybe thirty or more, he’s been very poor in many games and a handicap in two or three games to match the two good games he had, he doesn’t deserve to be selected on his form this season.

Yup. At his best he was a very very good player. You don’t sign for Barcelona if you aren’t. However, he hasn’t shown anything like his best form for a while now. Seems like a lovely fella and i hope he finds his best form again but at the moment he’s not adding anything to the team.

Who gets selected ahead of him in that third midfield role? Sigurdsson, Delph? Gomes gets in this team ahead of those clowns easily.

That doesn’t make him worthy of a place because he is better than the two you mention, I’d argue that he’s no better and probably worse on what he’s shown this year, granting him the excuse of a bad injury.
