I think this might be the only time he ever did this. Not just the scoring part. I can't remember him driving into the box and getting a shot away apart from this one.

His first derby also sticks out, he ran the show in the middle and remember him getting forward and I think hitting the post with a header? Either that or it being cleared off the line at 0-0.

Admittedly, we're probably going back to his loan spell since he last drove at the opposition.

Yeah certainly not to the extent that you'd have said it was a big part of his game. His best games for us he was just doing what he does now really, but doing it well. He was moving the ball around, using his body well to shield the ball and shrug people off, creating space for others etc. There's nothing particularly flamboyant about his game but if you do those things well you can dictate the tempo and flow of the game. For the last 2 years (since way before the injury) he just hasn't done that often enough. That's why I think to an extent he's just been sussed out. Teams saw what he was good at, stopped him doing it, and he hasn't got a lot else in his locker.

Yes and just to add what he's good at isn't enough if you don't have a lot of useful pieces around him. The year he was on loan it didn't matter that he didn't defend anything because Gueye could do all that work.

He definitely had more mobility before the leg break would a run help him or is it just he will never be the same again? He is still good on the ball sometimes but defensively and driving forward he is ponderous now. Such a shame and it's never mentioned how "Sonny" broke his leg.

Need to get him back doing this. Controlling possession in the middle and driving forward - it's always been when he's at his best for us.

He has this in his locker and he never utilizes it, Really frustrating. He's always used far too defensively like some deep playmaker.

I think Andre is slowly starting to come back - he has always had consistency issues, but the more time he gets the more he is growing.

Carlo clearly rates him, and I wouldn't be surprised if he is destined for a 3-4 week run in the team with Doucoure playing the Allan role over the same period.

That injury was utterly horrific, I really like him, so hope he comes back.

Said the Portuguese 2nd Division outfit that Valencia signed him from.

Can agree with most of this. He had a couple of decent games when he joined us culminating in a top performance against the RS. But I didn't think he had done enough to justify us signing him as he was very inconsistent. Since we signed him he is even more inconsistent. I get about his injury but he wasn't very good before that.
Nice passer of the ball. But didn't provide any forward threat and defensively is bad. He seems so slow which allows other players to pass him with ease. I wouldn't be bothered at all if we sold him

I think i said at the time of the full transfer that we shouldnt pay £20mil+ for him. I was ok with £22mil as its not a huge amount and I was hoping for consistency in his 2nd season.

Sadly its never arrived.

He was class when we got him on loan but since that injury he looks mentally and physically done which is not surprising it was horrific
hope he gets back to his best

What is his best and how often has he shown it?

Only at Valencia...

If our aspirations are top 4 (like Ancelotti says) we either need another James in the centre /or shift him inside and bring in a top right sided player.

Failing that a monster like Zakaria or a snide like Guimaraes.

Gomes is neither and i dont even know who would want him other than Valencia.

Hes never had 3 consistent games in a row apart from when he played for valencia...

I can’t understand the hate for him. It might be blinded by a suppressed man crush but I see him as a good player who is playing alright, despite having his leg snapped last season.
