American Food

A staple in my diet, along with baked pepperoni and mozzarella. Fat is good.

I keep remembering that Hush Puppies are apparently a food in America and it makes me angry, confused and sad.

It's just fried cornbread with some onion in it. No big thing. It's so good, though. Here's some with fried catfish and tartar sauce, it seems.

Might be cole slaw.

Ah right, so kind of like falafel, but corn instead of chickpeas. Do want.

Getting closer. Not nearly as dense as falafel - it's just a corn meal batter with onion. There are a million variations. I make mine with beer, it keeps 'em light. If you're camped out fishing, you can bring in corn meal, beer (of course) and an onion, and you're set. Fry 'em up with your catch. Pot of grits on the side won't hurt, either. Make that Coleman stove work hard.

If your dog is with you, you toss him one of these to keep him out of the fish - hence the name. That's the Alabama version of the story, anyway.

As always, my avatar is skeptical.

We make the best cheeses anywhere so just don't go for these colonial attempts none of them match a good British cheese.

Most US food is fine but the problem I have with it is the amount, it comes in mountains. We were in Orlando, the wife wasn't feeling good and wanted to stay in the hotel so I said I go to the local pizza parlour and pick up a pizza for a late evening meal. I ordered a family sized one to cover three of us, when it came it was the size of a wagon wheel, it staggered me. Got back to the hotel and the wife couldn't even look at it, the size of it took her appetite away, I managed a quarter slice and I was hungry. A few days later in Tampa's Bush Gardens I had ribs that came along like those served on Bedrock to Fred Flintstone.

Nearly all the food was cooked perfectly although a high proportion had landed part prepared at a factory somewhere. The staff in every outlet were sapot on, partly because they rely on tips but even so they were better than we have.

I understand the sale of our brown sauce and booming Stateside, they are being educated slowly.

I've learned to cross my parents' native cuisines with American food. My mom comes from Israel and my dad is from Southern China, so there are a lot of spices to work with when making a marinade for chicken/steak or meat rub (so to speak) for smoking. That's what I love about homemade American food. We borrow from everyone and add it to our own.

Unfortunately if you just travel here you're subjected to restaurants which are awful in comparison. It has been awhile since I've enjoyed eating out. Too much fat, too much sodium, too much food in general.
