Hmm...not entirely sure I follow the international bit. Seattle is a huge gateway to Asia. In terms of foreign nationals, I suppose you are probably right, but every major Canadian city would be classed that way. Economy wise Seattle is a MUCH larger city on the world stage. Seattle ranks just behind Toronto and just ahead of Miami in terms of GDP. I guess in terms of global influence Vancouver might be ahead, but I'd say that's down more to Canada having only really three cities that would be classed that way, where America has many more.

Don't get me wrong, I love Vancouver, but Seattle offers just as much if not more IMO. I am likely biased in that I've actually lived there and in Portland, but only have visited Vancouver a dozen times.

Portland is like a smaller version...but some very cool stuff. Mt Hood and the Columbia River Gorge are really close. Huge parks throughout the city. Beautiful city with loads of natural beauty.

Seattle has WAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY too many homeless people for my liking! They're constantly harassing you in the street - daytime, nighttime, any bloody time. Naturally beautiful yes, but not even remotely close to Vancouver in terms of natural beauty.

I do enjoy visiting Seattle (off there week after next), but much prefer the surrounding areas - as you mentioned Portland is much more pleasant to me. But given the choice of the three, I'd take Vancouver every single time. The Island is just gorgeous. The cuisine, nightlife, city itself - all awesome, plus - and this was the tipping point for me - Vancouver has Nandos!!!

Fair enough...to each their own.

I don't get the natural beauty bit though. Vancouver is very beautiful. Mt Rainier (I could stare at that mountain all day), Lake Washington, Lake Union, the Puget Sound, the Olympic mountains, the views from Kerry Park to downtown, the views from West Seattle to full frontal of downtown...all of these things are within view from the city. So many more.

Again, I am biased as it is my favorite city on the planet that I am aware of. Vancouver seems a bit too sterilized to me. Homelessness is a problem in any major city including Vancouver. If you were harassed, I would imagine you were somewhere near Pioneer Square, the U District, or Capitol Hill. You don't really see it in the vast majority of the city.
