Am I out of touch?

I'm gonna throw my two cents in and make you feel even better.

Despite my age i am a huge fan of video games and sometimes like to view a website called Twitch to get a gander at new games just released or undiscovered games; to see if i would like them before a purchase.

There is thousands of people on that platform who play video games as their main job in life. The viewer (if he feels like) can pay a subscription fee to the gamers channel (not needed to view). That gamer/streamer keeps 60% of that subscription fee. Not only is it their main job, but i am seeing people making upwards of 50k a month.... some well over 100k a month. This is not including people donating money, sponsorship deals etc. Its absolutely outrageous that people are being paid this kind of money by playing video games.

One such ' streamer ' has recently signed a contract to stream his channel on a Twitch's rival platform Mixer. That contract is rumored to be upwards of 10 million a year..... NOT including money he will receive through subscriptions. The mind boggles and it really is a sorry state of affairs. That is the world we live in now though

Why is it outrageous? People are prepared to pay to watch them play games, they exploit that niche in the market.

Like i said, you don't have to pay anything to view a channel. The only thing a subscription gives you is that you won't see a 15 second add once an hour.

Its outrageous because the OP is saying ' is he out of touch '. It seems the vast majority of us are out of touch and have missed a trick. The streamer that recently switched platforms that i just mentioned is followed millions of kids. I can't help but feel these kids are being led down the wrong path in the sense that: ' I can do what he is doing '. Its a complete false sense of what life will bring for 99.9% of those that think like this. I know this is a whole different point to what the thread is really about but still

But that's the same with any aspirational thing. Lots of kids want to be footballers or in a band, only a few try seriously and of those only a few "make it". It doesn't stop them having fun or meeting interesting people and learning new stuff.

As to being out of touch.. I watch, on occasion, YouTube "content" on some stuff I'm interested in... I have not deemed any of it of sufficient quality to part with my hard earned to keep them producing it.

As a writer, sometimes it galls me that people don't seem to want in-depth stuff any more, they want clickable, short pieces they can comment on. But I stick to what I'm good at and hope the wheel will turn again, fair play to those doing well in the new media.

Something not yet mentioned, is how much tax gets paid by wealthy footballers. And the more they earn, the more they pay in tax, which is a greater contribution to society.

This is an interesting article from 2017. The average UK worker on £27k a year, paid £5.5k in tax. The average Premier League footballer paid £1.8 million in tax, equal to the same paid by 331 average pay workers.

At the higher end of the scale, Pogba on £290k a week, paid just over £7 million in tax, the same as 1279 average pay workers. This would 'pay' for 280 nurses a year.

Just reading about Jaydon Sancho getting a new contract at £190,000 a week.
He is 19.
My daughter is 25 and works for the NHS as a neo natal nurse on a kids intensive ward. She qualified at uni with a first class degree. She works a 13 hour shift. She is paid £25,000 a year.
I’m not blaming Jaydon nor am I jealous.
But something is not right.
It’s why I am falling out of love with professional football

I came to that conclusion a couple of years ago now, and booted sky TV into touch. I gave up my season ticket too.
I have to work a year to earn what some of the kids in football earn each week now.
It is just become obscene what some footballers are paid, and I refuse to contribute to it any more

I go to watch non league games for £3 oap and see some fantastic matches.
To put it into obscene perspective it would take a nurse over 400 years to make what a premiership footballer earns in 1 year

no its the people that lap it up that are to blame !

mind numbing really when you think about it.

and people these days would rather watch two youtubers have a fight and pay them millions in pay per view than go and watch actual boxers perform at world level

Hardly mind bending is it?
I like football so i pay for sky

Whats mind bending About that

When the public in general are prepared to pay to watch nurses doing their jobs for 90 minutes, with a tea break half way through, (both live and televised) and buy nursing related souvenirs (replica nurses uniforms etc). When nurses become internationally recognised media stars and feature in Nivea (spit) adverts. When nurses' opinions are sought by news outlets on subjects totally outside of their job zone, and they get paid for them. When nurses get a percentage cut of their value when transferred from A&E to Maternity, then maybe, just maybe, the pay gap between Premier League footballers and nurses will be reduced slightly. Don't hold your breath waiting though.

insert 'so your saying there's a chance' meme
