Extremely sad for the people out there. Do ISIS have very different goals to the Taliban? I assumed (wrongly) that they both had similar goals.

They’re both extreme Sunni Islamist groups however ISIS are deffo more extreme in their interpretation of Sharia law.

For example ISIS consider all Shia Muslims as animals and legitimate targets. The Taliban do not hold these beliefs.

TBF ISIS’s belief structure always seemed more heavily influenced by America (especially right wing US Christian fundamentalists) than it was a standard, back to real Islam movement of the kind that seems to emerge every second generation - as in that it had to be spectacular, the world had to shake and achievements presented to the masses rather than prizing modesty and simplicity of belief.

They wanted people to go over there and presented the idea of riches, slaves, and glorious victory. They were finally going to rid the world of traitors, heretics etc unlike every other regime in history, their country was going to be the the best and so on. I am not sure it was ever going to be that much about Sharia as it would have been about supremacy.

Yeah it’s a twisted ideology based loosely on their own interpretation of Sharia.

Taliban hate them as well

Sleepy Jo with blood on his hands now. And for what, coz he didn’t want to leave a few thousand troops in country, keep the stalemate with the taliban that ultimately meant peace. I would love a swift, aggressive retort to these attacks but I fear the allies will just pack up what they can and get out of there. A disgrace of a situation, all completely avoidable.
