Pretty similar to the Fall of Saigon, heartbreaking to watch unfold on TV but what was, rationally, was the alternative? Stay there forever?!

In both cases the wars out in these far away lands were utterly unwinnable, US stayed for far too long and by the time the plug was pulled it was far too late to save any sort of face. Western superpowers are not the world's police, rocking up to Islamist countries and installing open democracies. If the people in those parts of the world want that then they need to rise up and fight for it themselves. We killed Bin Laden and most of the other top Al-Qaeda brass, the militants out there are in no position to launch any sort of large scale attack on us again. Job done.

Biden's done the right thing but at the wrong time, it will probably be his legacy as president but the blame should go to the people who sent us there in the first place.

Hopefully Afghanistan will end up like Vietnam. That wouldn't be a bad result but its unlikely.

I can't see Kabul looking like Ho Chi Minh City any time soon.

Fundamentally you've got to feel sorry for the average Afghan. They're basically caught in a never ending geopolitical battle. A seemingly endless cycle of violence and uncertainty (political, social and literal fighting).

Have often sadly referred to lines like this when talking about Afghanistan and Iraq with the military personnel in hospital and rehabilitation here. "America is not at war. The all-volunteer US military is doing political work with guns and bombs. Americans are shopping online at Amazon and bitching about their wifi network strength." (multiple variations of this theme exist. it's not my own. the latest involved bitching about the horrors of wearing a mask.)

I take no solace in having protested and spoken vigorously against expanded efforts in Afghanistan and both incursions into Iraq. It's gut-wrenchingly painful watching these scenes. My soul hurts for those who will face recriminations from the Taliban.

But I have less than zero intention of listening to Generals who lied for decades now playing CYA (Petraeus, McMaster, etc), talking heads whose job is to push horse races and scandal for ratings (dollars) and will abandon this issue in a week or so when the next scandal rears its head or almost any politicians period. I have serious issue with Biden at the moment but do thank him for having the balls to say the buck stops with him, unlike the previous occupant who never accepted responsibility for anything. Let's hold Joe to this pledge.

Literally nothing is tidy when it comes to war, except for those who stand to profit from it financially or politically.
