Aaron Lennon

What's his primary function? And how many did we score yesterday?

The only reason I'm singling him out is because people are waxing lyrical about a man who should be creating goals.

The same criticism is reserved for Cleverley, Oviedo, Coleman. They are all very good players who should be creating chances for Lukaku (who also needs to do more).

That team needs to be creating goals when we are playing against teams who set up to frustrate, not just the ones who are flying at us.

How is criticising the team (Lennon being part of it) after not scoring or creating anything in that second half not a worthy one?

Let me guess. Is the answer Kone?

I don't think Lennon deserved the hook yesterday, he was trying hard, he has been putting the effort in for a while now. I have no problem when a player is substituted, even if he doesn't deserve it. Sometimes individuals have to be sacrificed for the good of the team. But when this happens it needs to lead to a change in style, taking a player who is playing well off for a player who is going to do the same thing is not helping. If he thought Del would be better than Lennon start him.
Our Plan B appears to be Plan A only try harder.

Tbh I though Lennon looked tired and hadn't been doing as many runs into the box, especially after WBA subbed McClean, and we needed to also add some fresh legs to keep the pressure up.

Don't think Deulofeu did the same thing as Lennon, although some of the runs into the box were similar he did a bit more going out wide and trying to cross it in. He also took over taking the corners from Oviedo which slightly changed who we had in the box at set pieces and how we delivered them.

None if it worked of course but believe it a touch unfair to say it was just the same plan, both Lennon and Deulofeu are good players but they have quite different strengths.

Exactly. It wasn't that Lennon played badly, but Del needed to come on and he plays on the right, and Lennon's threat had been nullified somewhat.

As someone has brilliantly pointed out in the match thread, there was logic to all the changes. Unfortunately they didn't work out.

Yes, i'd have liked to see Kev come on perhaps, or to try something a bit more attacking, but I actually don't think it was going to be our day either way. When an effort like Barkley's and like the Cleverley one somehow don't go in, you kind of know you're out of luck.

Hugely frustrating but it is what it is.

The role this guy plays for the team can never be underetimsted. I know I love the defensive side of the game, but the speed at which he closes/tackles back is amazing. I lost track of the little foot in's he did after sprinting 20/30yds today. I love this little fella with a passion.

Agreed. He's won me over now.

Deulofeu is the future though and if he could add some of lennons workrate to his game then he will be exceptional. I hope hes taking notes.

I thought a true sign of the class of Aaron was once we scored the 2nd goal, he was the one running round chasing the opposition down. Things like that really help to kill a couple of minutes play for the opposition and takes away any momentum they may try and create if we have a lapse of concentration.

It certainly wasn't a case of job done, he knew there was work to do to get the result and was excellent.
