A Case for the Defence

There were a lot more than 2 crap seasons in that 11 or do you have a selective memory.
17th and 11th. So 2 crap seasons in 11 or 2 crap seasons in 3.

Also the circumstances that Martinez and Moyes were managing in for those crap seasons is totally different. Martinez has some of the most sought after young talent in Europe at his disposal, one of them being a striker that's scored 23 goals this season. Moyes was playing with Tony Hibbert, James Beattie, Marcus Bent etc.

Well if you think the way forward is Hoofball dross bring the Ginger one back , get your petition going ..that will go down well.

I can't believe it Dave we agree on something.

In fact I think I suggested mori as captain a few weeks ago and you said he wouldn't have the respect of the players yet (or something to that effect)

Nice to see we do eventually see eye to eye the odd time though
Yes, I did. But the more I see of Jagielka, the greater presence Mori seems to generate.

I'm not sure it's the right time for him just now, but I'd have Mori as captain before Jagielka....that's how hopeless Jagielka is as a skipper.

Complete myth that all we played was 'hoofball dross' under Moyes and I never said I'd want Moyes back. I just want a competent manager.
He was a dullard who barely put together a handful of pleasurable to watch performances in the 11 years he was here. I backed Moyes right up to 2009, btw, but his teams were toe curling bad. We rightly got the tag as a long ball team under Moyes. His favourite move was 'get it in the mixer to big Felli, lads. Well get a knock down from that'.

It was a hideous period of anti-football.

I'm sorry, but you're not going to get away with minimizing that memory or trying to erase it. Not one bit of it.

I'd have to agree. Jags has been a serviceable captain on the field, but he doesn't seem to be the captain we need off of it. Obviously, I have no idea how the locker room is (I've never been inside of it), but from what I gather, Jags leads more by example on the field and is less of a vocal leader.

I think with the big names we are planning on keeping, acquiring, and bringing up, we need a more vociferous captain. One that can relate to other players who may be getting big offers from other clubs, who may struggle in the process of skill development and game management, and, really, someone who can keep up with the young guns on the squad. With all the young talent in the back, it's hard to see Jags fitting into a role when we have guys like Ramiro, Stones, and even the younger guys that can offer more ability.

What I am trying to say is make Ross captain already, dammit!! :P

I don't know if it's been said already, but Everton were flying after the January window four years ago.

I was going to write similar to this blasting Martinez, but I'm actually going to do so after a notable win, so that it's not accused of kneejerking.

As a short reply, no, I don't think we're better off now than when Martinez joined. The league has seen money flow into it which has resulted in off the field investment, and we now have a billionaire owner. On the pitch, where Martinez has influence, we've regressed badly, and his signings have been good, but on that note so were David Moyes', who left us in a strong position relative to the net spend he had available.

Because we're led by a manager who has no knowledge of how to balance a team, we will never progress effectively, and even if we have little spurts of results, there's always going to be a massive "if" over the consistency required to compete properly under his philosophy. The pumping in of investment will obviously help him move up the league table a bit, but ultimately there's dozens of other managers who will be able to do a better job with what is coming than he ever could.

To cite the OJ Simpson case

If he doesn't fit, he should a-quit!
