They changed it so the runners up in both cups dont qualify and the place drops back to the league.

God knows about the intertoto thing though. Those links didn't seem to confirm anything although it looks good for us.

Thanks for that, I didn't realise the rule change regarding runners-up. It's hard to keep up these days.(y)

Considering what has happened this season, I'd say 6th place is a very good place to be.

One or two good players for the new season will make us roar.

it certainly is, i didn't realise that change had come in either :

Back-door route into Europe is shut for FA Cup final losers in new Uefa shake-up

Until now, beaten finalists have been allowed into the Uefa Cup whenever the winners have already qualified for the Champions League, a scenario that occurred repeatedly in England until this year’s final when Portsmouth, who finished eighth in the Premier League, beat Championship side Cardiff.

Uefa want as many spots as possible to be allocated on the basis of league placings. It is all part of a campaign to rebrand the Uefa Cup, which is expected to be renamed the Uefa Europa League as of 2009-10 when a new group stage system will be introduced to mirror the Champions League format.

“With a new format you need a new identity,” said Uefa spokesman William Gaillard. “The tournament is supposed to be for winners, not runners-up.”

not sure how 6th or 7th in the league makes you more of a winner than the losing cup-finalist, but i agree with the change nonetheless. however, i think they should go one step further & hand one of the cl places to the cup-winning team.

I love the opportunity the Uefa brings to the fan like myself but the club get Nowt for it. We have to crack the top four again and progress to get some real money.

Is top 4 likely? No. Is it still possible? For sure. Even if we get, say, 13 points from our next 6 games (which is the minimum I would expect) we'll likely make up ground on both Villa and Gunners.

So I'm still hoping but not expecting.

*waits with bated breath for the pregnancy jokes

Good point. We are getting through our treacherous schedule. I am quietly optimistic as well.(y)
