Current Affairs 2024 POTUS race

Word salad comes to mind, unless I am being thick, which is always a possibility 🤷‍♂️

Is it ever a good idea to have a racist sex offender felon stain on humanity with that much power?

Threats like the ones that have been thrown about should always be treated as real and, although I am technically outside looking in, I am married to an American and my new family has been directly threatened by Trumps rhetoric. That for me is enough to say that this stain should be nowhere near the Whitehouse, not even as a tourist. He should not even be tasting freedom right now.

I understand his leaning towards Putin and Xi Jinping, as they`re old school dictators and he`s all in on that.

But, I can`t work out his attraction to Trump, as he`s everything that Dave professes to hate - big business, ultra right wing, etc etc.

For people who live their lives in the political bubble of the US then all the Project 2025 stuff looks like an existential threat.

But when you dont live there you have a different perspective; yes you can see the danger he and his conservative-loaded Supreme Court poses to progressive laws that have been passed; but from a global perspective the world has seen one term of Trumpism already and there was a marked difference in the willingness of Trump to become embroiled in foreign policy adventures. So although he comes across as a loose cannon and unfit for office, he doesn't come across as the existential threat he does to liberal-minded Americans. (To the non-American western elite he may be seen as a danger to NATO and being soft on the 'axis of evil' Russia-China, but to most ordinary/normal people that doesn't even register for them.)

In short, the thread is dominated by the concerns of liberal Americans, so that anyone outside of that cohort projecting ahead to the 2028 election for POTUS - beyond a second Trump presidency if it's to be that - looks fanciful, such is the level of fear about the abyss the US faces with Trump II.
Trump has stated that there won’t be a 2028 election

That 2nd para reads like a very wordy version of a MAGA tweet I’ve probably seen hundreds of times since 2016

How much is Putin paying you Dave? I'll double it

I'm pointing out that unless you just want an echo chamber then another angle to this debate (and one from another anti-Trump perspective, which mine is) should be respected and not just dismissed as being pro-Trump or 'awkward'. Like it or not, people on the left in this country dont necessarily believe that American liberal-progressives support of this particular candidates (due ultimately to the lack of real political choice which flows from a system that doesn't allow PR) is a complete no brainer.

I can easily see from this vantage point why working class Americans dont automatically fall under the spell of someone like Harris and that some feel the gravitational pull to a racist like Trump.

Yes, of course you're right to feel that way given your personal circumstances. I'd feel like that way too if it were me. But Im not advocating supporting Trump, I'm stating that the American electorate as a whole have a pretty poor choice on offer. Just like us in this country. Pointing that out surely cant be controversial.

No, he specifically stated that if he wins this time then the Christian fascists will never have to vote again

Maybe he was promising the return of the messiah (end of days?) and that said messiah will lead the erm, true believers to heaven and beyond, leaving the rest of us with a bit more elbow room down here.

I’m pretty sure Ukrainians, despite being outside “the political bubble of the US” see him as an existential threat. Trump will drop all support and just let Putin do what he wants. Taiwanese probably worry the same thing.

Of course he will. Just as Afghans were left to the Taliban under Biden.

Both of them made decisions they believe is for America's interest, but neither represent an existential threat to the US.

Just like a Trumper to state that anyone who isn’t MAGA is a “liberal American”

FFS

It’s clear you truly don’t understand the true threat to our country Donald Trump poses - not just to the US, but to the world. Because like it or not the US is a big part of that

Don’t believe me? Then perhaps you’ll listen to the quite literally hundreds of Republicans both inside and outside of his first administration that don’t think he should get within a mile of the White House again

Or are they just liberal RINOS?

Some of your takes are inconceivable honestly. I mean you can just come out and say you don’t care about individuals, per se, but maybe in some history book 500 years from now someone will be able to read back that Trump winning in 2024 set the stage for a blissful new order in 2080. Well I don’t care about that

And not only these thjngs

But Donald Trump is, by any measure, one of the most objectively unintelligent people to have ever held high office

He is breathtakingly stupid

I dont use the word 'liberal' as a pejorative. That'd be the difference. That's just your reflex action to the word being used in American political discourse.

I'm not 'MAGA' or a 'Trumper'. I want that leather faced racist leading the western world as much as you do. I'm a socialist. And I think that's what your gripe here is with me, tbh.

Trump made the “deal” with the Afghans, Biden was just left with the mess (which he also handled badly).

I’ll defer to the folks like @PhilM who have studied WW2 but I don’t think the US going very isolationist has a great record for either its own or other countries long term benefit even if you don’t care one whit what happens to the Ukrainians.
