Gabbard's rather more amenable to authoritarian rule than most Democrats, perhaps owing to her having been raised in a cult.

Her family were part of a religious cult (theologically derived from Hinduism) presided over by a charismatic leader who brooked no resistance.

Here's a journalistic take: http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/06/tulsi-gabbard-2020-presidential-campaign.html

Here's a long tweet:

Cool. Sounds like a relatively healthy belief system: yoga, no conflict, self-control etc tho' fairly conservative traditionalist views on things like hedonism, abortion and homosexuality. Tulsi confirmed her views on those things have matured and liberalised over the years (much like how a Christian/Catholic's view on such things improve as society improves).

What say you?

I say she's too amenable to authoritarian rule for most Democrats (and people like me who aren't Democrats but who've voted against Republicans at every opportunity since Reagan started us down the road to our current woeful imbroglio). And I don't have enormous faith in a person's ability to be sufficiently flexible to lead in a very complicated world when they've been raised within rigidly dogmatic structures.

what a fine word! i didn't know it, had to google...will have to use it at some point.

Regarding being raised within rigidly dogmatic structures, haven't they all?

Im-bro-lee-oh!

And no, most candidates haven't been raised within rigidly dogmatic structures. Many of them are coming from careers in business and politics, after all, where flexibility is a key component of success.

fair enough...for me that's not enough to get me off the Tulsi train, it all seems harmless enough but I understand where you're coming from.

Just to go back to this point: isn't Tulsi evolving her views on the cult's rigidity surrounding abortion, homosexuality etc a sign that she's flexible?

Probably depends on how sincere you believe her evolution has been.

She wouldn’t be the first (or last) politician to look at her voter demographics (Hawaii state has elected just one Republican U.S. senator, Hiram Fong, who served from 1959 to 1977, and two GOP House members - rest have been Democrats) and realize that some evolution is required in order to achieve personal political ambition.
