Great post mate.

And even those who are thought to have more than a basic understanding eg economists, scientists can often be found to be wrong later down the line.

Instincts and gut feelings can also be as or more valuable than getting into detail in a big way

Certainly they are better than believing bad advice, or being part of a herd mentality as some areas of academia have been guilty of in the past, but there really is no argument against people educating themselves and testing to see whether or not what they are told is true.

Absolutely we should aspire to educate our people more and give them better prospects in life, but even the most educated person will still have different outlooks on life, politics ect. It's interesting though, I doubt we'd be having a conversation about people being intelligent enough to vote had the plebs voted the "correct way" in the referendum. It's obvious what the problem is really, upset the status quo and be prepared to face the wrath of your betters. How dare we not do as we've been told. It's almost as though the chattering classes don't know their place?!

The are you intelligent to vote is a pointless debate - our justice system is based on a jury decision - we don't intelligence test juries - so if we have decided anyone over 18 can make a sound decision on whether someone is guilty of murder - then they also have the right and capability to vote. There is always to odd stupid person who says things like "I voted to leave because I saw a straight banana in the supermarket" but that didn't decide the results. My issue is the basic lies of politicians - the £350 million to the NHS claim was a lie - pure and simple - if it had been an advert by a company it would be banned but somehow it was allowed to be used throughout the election. Anyone can vote but unfortunately we appear to have got in a position now were outright deceit is seen as acceptable and people are making decisions on what they think is the truth but is a pure con. Yes you could say - well if they were cleverer then they'd know it was complete crap - but actually I think the responsibility should be with political parties not to come out with such rubbish. Yes spin stuff, gloss around the edges, it has always happened - but the £350 million claim was another level.

The EU and Scottish Independence referendums are a joke because it wasn't clear what you are voting for - nobody could define what would happen if we left the EU (customer market wasn't even mentioned) Scotland - nobody even knew what currency they would use - how can anyone possibly make a sound decision when you don't know what the impact is of one of the options on the ballet paper.

Interesting sub plot of this election is that the tories look like they will become the main opposition in Scotland. Polling at around 30% and first time above labour in over 50 years.

The Scottish Tory leader is quite an appealing leader. Maybe, after Scotland rejects independence she should become leader of the Tories for the whole of the UK.

Now that would be a good antidote to the Oxbridge/Eton lot...

Did you see her on FMQs the other day? Just wow at how terrible she is - Dugdale is like a lamb to the slaughter for a competent politician in Sturgeon.

She seems decent yeah. At least tories are clear in their unionism and get gain votes from pro union types. Labour are all over the place on the constitution so are in no man's land. Polls tonight tip them to actually do worse than last time and get completely wiped out. Not sure how that's even possible.

I didn't , but I've always thought she came over well to the public and is a prime factor in why the Tories are doing better in Scotland than expected. (I could be wrong though)
