If there is no agreement to restore the Northern Irish assembly, and direct rule is imposed, then the government can extend the 1967 Abortion Act to Northern Ireland.

Soooo. Under a power sharing agreement, no chance that would happen? But if the DUP duck and dive in the negotiations, they will bank on the Tories imposing it from London?

Well I just think the whole thing is more difficult then your making it out to be from the church's perspective. The church's view on abortion is old fashioned one built on tradition, religious beliefs are built on traditions. I'm not saying it's right just how it is. I can only say that from my perspective as a church going Catholic that I wouldn't welcome sweeping reforms to the church in the sense of the beliefs it's built on. As I've alredy said I think it's a disgrace that the church should have any influence politically or laws of the land and I'd rather the church and state be kept as far apart as possible.
Tell America that the church and the state should be kept apart.

I respect your right to your belief, mate.

I feel a bit daft asking this, but why?

The DUP that is. In my limited knowledge of NI politics, I always think of the DUP as a the party of the Orangemen and that. I.E. Not Catholic. Or is that wrong?

The DUP's protestant religion is Presbyterian - brought to Ireland by the 100 000 Scottish plantation settlers in the 17th century. One of their beliefs is pro-life, anti abortion. Some see it as the control of women similar to why the catholic church in Ireland is against abortion.

I wouldn't try finding logic either politically or religiously from America mate. It's a country built on hypocrisy and contradiction and is more riddled with it today then ever.

Thanks mate. I had no idea about that.

Was basing my misinformed info on the Live of Brian sketch it seems.

The DUP are against abortion and would not vote for it in the Northern Irish assembly. For it to get passed in the assembly Sein Fein would have to change their stance.

I'm not having a go at NI, I'm from a catholic background myself and it's a stain on the religion.

From the little I've read it seems this pope might be a bit more progressive so fingers crossed.
Didn't think for one moment you were having a go mate. Was just pointing out that it's not exclusive to them even within the British Isles.

The queens speech vote scraping through means this is going to be carnage if May stays now.

Can't front this out can she ?

Of course she can, Corbyn is already having to cull his front bench because half a dozen defied him and voted with Umunna. The tories are solidly united while Labour start to fall apart........

The DUP were actually predominantly formed out of Ian Paisley's free Presbyterian Church that he formed before he was heavily involved in politics. Free Presbyterianism is a more extreme and fundamentalist version of your regular Presbyterian. Although not all DUP members and representatives are free p's the churches values and traditional ways still largely dictates the party's principals.

Any suggestion that the DUP or indeed any other party has principles will not be understood by many on here......

So, that election thingy. We did better than I thought we would, but we still lost.
The best analogy I've read was that we were 3-0 down after five minutes but fought back to a creditable 4-3 loss, but we still ended up with no points.
