They got more of the vote share and many more seats. They represent the will of the people as thus.

It's like claiming 48% of people voted for not leaving the EU, so we shouldn't leave to respect the will of the people. It doesn't make sense - a result is a result.

What you are meaning to say is that the political wind has gone one way, but not to the definitive extent to win an election.

If you are saying 'vote share' is the 'will of the people' - 60% of those that voted, the majority voted against the Tories, therefore the 'will of the people'. Isn't the anti Tory vote the 'will of the people' then?

Yes, but they got the single most votes of any party - nearly a million more than their nearest rival.

As for the others, you can't say they voted against the Tories (although I certainly voted against Labour, so a bit hypocritical here), because they voted for a political party. You can add up each of the left of centre parties if you want, but when you have the likes of the Lib Dems actually ruling out any dealings with Labour and the SNP wanting to gain something from doing so (independence), then it's a pointless exercise.

Christ.

Since the war not one party has secured 50% or more of the vote. By your insane logic, we've never had a "will of the people" government. That's not how our democracy works and it's the envy of the world.

Many people didn't vote for their party just because it was "anti-Tory". They voted for their MPs impact on their local area, or their views on the environment, or gay rights etc.

You've got to stop seeing the mad conspiracy in everything.

Well done. It wasn't hard to understand, even for you.

As far as UK democracy goes - in this instance voting for MPs - being the 'envy of the world'. I would love to see the data for this. More of a huch I would suggest.

Many people did vote for their party because it was anti Tory. You mean you have you never heard, the many say 'I've voted for ... to get the Tories out, or to stop them getting in'. I am sure people vote for an MP based on what you said.

Voters vote for people and increase their majority. For instance,

"Diane Abbott has been re-elected as the MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, with 42,265 votes – 75 per cent of the vote.

This is an increase of 10,908 votes since she was re-elected in the General Election of 7 May 2015 with 31,357 votes". Now that is the will of the people.

Really not complicated mate. But go ahead making it all up again.

As I've said mate, you're making up your own stuff and that's fine.

so...when the maybot goes (more likely run over by a tractor in a wheat field) which "strong and stable" tory is going to replace her?

They haven't got anyone as they are all a bunch of dunderheads who only get away with things because of a timid media. The main culprit because the state controlled BBC who have bent over backwards this election to keep Corbyn out.

You said this,

"Has anyone reminded Corbyn he lost yet? All this talk of how the Tories should step aside and let him exert 'the will of the people' is utterly crackers".

The Tories should step aside as they too don't exert 'the will of the people' so don't represent the majority.

After the 1974 the Queen invited Ted Heath to form a government even though Labour had more seats. The Monarchy played a very dangerous game with democracy in this country, by going against the 'will of the people'.

How many governments in the last few hundred years have actually secured a majority of the population voting for them?

We had a vote on changing the electoral system a few years ago.

The result was no.

What that meant was that it didn't change.

Democracy in action...
