I thought the planned minimum wage rises (to what the Tories call the living wage, though its not the living wage quoted by some sort of living wage foundation) were greater than inflation, but could be wrong.

Just thought I'd give the Tories some credit for those things that I wouldn't have expected them to do.

To me Tories, UKIP and anyone except out and out nazis should be welcome on here and I'd hate to see them being scared off as it is no fun debating with yourself ;)

It's going up to over 9 quid an hour for over 25s by 2019 and then inflationary rises from then on.

Getting fed up of you now mate. Unless you come on here and debate properly and start to welcome all shades of opinion I won't have much time for you

Debating properly! We in the House of Lords on here mates? Some of you aspire to be mind. It's an Everton forum

To me the different forums have a different character and you have derailed this one tonight.

What you do may be right for the alehouse etc (even then you have to watch it as when the posters become the subject it can have the effect of becoming unwelcoming to newer posters) but IMO it isn't right for this one.

Just my opinion and I know you are a decent guy with some great posts and previews that really add something to the site but I do think you have derailed it this evening.

The Loony party campaign is now in full swing with twelve candidates declared so far:

  • The Howling ‘Laud – Maidenhead
  • Nigel Knapp – Islington North
  • Chinners – Kingston and Surbiton
  • Baron Badger – Walton and Esher
  • The Iconic Arty Pole – Louth and Horncastle
  • The Good Knight Sir Nosdar – Aldridge and Brownhills
  • Dominic – Surrey Heath
  • Baron Von Thunderclap – Mid Sussex
  • Mad Mike Young – Sittingbourne and Sheppey
  • The Mid Bed Minx – Mid Bedforshire
  • Sir Dudley the Crazed – Ceredigeon Wales
  • Farmin Lord Dave 1st of Haughton – Denton and Reddish

Please note that anyone wishing to stand for Parliament has until 11th May to secure sufficient nominations to stand

Unfortunately I don't know 10 people

That's a bit elitist Jon. You a Tory pal?

Anyone that thinks the average man or woman gives a rats arse about the majority of those things is living in dreamland !
I mean, fox hunting and badger culling, come on, whoever came up with that list is on a different planet.

Of the ones where Corbyn and May differ the following might be important in making swing voters vote Labour or Tory :-

  • Bedroom Tax
  • Top rate of tax
  • Welfare
  • Trident and
  • VAT
Most of the rest come under the heading "Preaching to the converted".
Think you missed a key one off your list. Tuition fees is definitely a big factor for lots of people, whether voters are current students, going to uni in September or have family/friends about to go uni.

Average student does a 3 year degree. £9,250 a year, £27,750 in total. Roughly £3k maintenance loans per year, another 9k. Around £37k debt at the age of 22/23 is appalling, and May wants to raise tuition fees even higher.

Corbyn has announced students will be getting maintenance grants plus I bet tuition fees info will be announced in the coming weeks (if I haven't already missed it?). It's actually a big reason why I'm going to vote for Labour and I think the policies are going to win a lot of younger people's votes (whether they go out and vote is a different story).

Sorry for the mini rant but it's an issue that I can seriously relate with

I'm literally just out of uni coming up on 2 years now so have the debts over me. But it's effectively a graduate tax. I didn't pay one brown penny at the point of use. If I eventually work my way into a good job, with a good salary due to my degree education, then surely it's only right I give something back. I feel ok with that to be honest. I deserve to pay for it, not hard working people like my old who weren't privileged enough to receive higher level education.

In short, I think the hysteria about debt from students is a lot of nonsense. It's free at point of use, and you only start paying back once you've a decent salary.

That picture could equally apply to Corbyn.

Perhaps. I'm slightly troubled by your pride in it, though. And I still can't reconcile your pretty dim initial comment about bullying nations with anything approaching reality.

That's mindless nationalism for you, though...

Come on Clint, you're in education, you should be able to read between the lines and at least understand history......

It's all about opinion. I know a lot of people who never went/aren't going uni because of the debt. I know people in a similar situation to yours who could definitely do without the debt.

Surely all students would rather prefer less debt than they currently get. Whatever your opinion is of Corbyn, he's got the right policy on this one.
