1995-2020 = the longest barren spell without silverware in Everton's history

We should be aiming to overtake Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea, Wolves and even Spurs who judging on their end of season premier league capitulation and their disgraceful CL final showing could have serious issues going forward. All of the teams above are no great shakes but we have to buy a very good striker and a few more and start well. Have to go for a cup this season. They owe us big time.

We’re not overtaking Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs
or United, not with Moshiri and Kenwright.

I fear we're too far behind the top 5-6 to ever catch up. It'll only ever be one off trophy wins for other clubs now. The top lot have too much money, power and pull..
True, the proof is Leicester.. they won the league then Chelsea who hadn't even qualified for the champions league took their best player.. that's the pull of the sky 6 and media trying to keep the big 6 where they are.. and if we did come out of nowhere and win the league you could bet your bottom dollar the media would do it's best to dismantle our team too. There'd be reports of City wanting to sign Richarlson and offering 300K a week, city don't know anything about it but now Richarlson wants out.

We are the only team that can stop us getting to the top tho.

Thats my point, sure when we get we will have teams to compete with, but we dont need to fear a team that doesnt even play in the same league as us, like Leeds.

Leeds, Villa, City, PSG, Barca, none of them will impact on our goal to compete.

Only Everton will.

I’m still waiting for Stoke and Swansea to overtake us after loads on here were convinced they were after they chucked a bit of money round one summer.

What doesn’t get reported though is that the gap is closing though isn’t it. Think about where we were in the late 90s/early 2000s battling relegation every season. United and Arsenal were winning doubles and trebles at that point going invincible. Now we’re at the point where we’re asking the question around whether we could finish ahead of them next season. So the gap has closed. Think how far Chelsea were ahead of us in 05/06, it was men vs boys whenever we went up against them. Are we closer to them now? Yes. When Liverpool were winning the treble in 2001 finishing second in 02 and we were battling relegation, where we closer to them then than we are now? No.

So it’s been slow, we’ve messed up yes, there’s been some horrible gut punches, but no one can deny that the gap has closed. We’ve got a stadium on the horizon and Brands at the strings now just as United look in disarray. If Pochettino goes who knows what spurs might be like. We’ve finished top 6 before with worse teams than this.

If anyone in the prem can do it it’s us.

What’s the actual aim from within the club? I don’t even know if I want to know I’m depressed enough.

Wow

I'll have what you're having

Nothing worse than those "neighbours" of ours enjoying success. Nothing we can do about it. Collars up heads down and ride the storm. Some of you remember the 70s they won everything and football wise life was a misery. Too bad. Try and ignore our dear "neighbours". Frustrating not being able to use the description I really want to type.

What part of it isn’t true? We’ve gone from a side that battles relegation to one that’s now disappointed with 8th. We’ve finished in the top 6 numerous times in the last 15 years including once in the top 4 all with less resources than we have now. We’ve finished ahead of United, Spurs, City, Liverpool multiple times in that period all with less resources than we have now.

Some of the top 6 are on the up currently, some are on the down. The ones that are on the up are only a managerial exit from heading down. Good teams don’t stay good forever.

If we position ourselves as consistent challengers to the top 6. Getting European football on a regular basis, recruiting well every window, moving to the new stadium, there will be a season when one if not more of the top 6 will be off their game and like Spurs did we will have an opportunity to get champions league football.

Throwing the toys out the pram because Liverpool won a cup and saying it’s impossible to catch teams managed by Solskjaer with Smalling Jones and Young in their 11, or some teams we just blasted for fun at Goodison, will not solve anything. FFS Leicester won a league after escaping relegation, we got top 4 over Benitez’s European champs with Marcus Bent leading the line. We finished ahead of a Liverpool team containing different combos of Gerrard Torres Suárez and Coutinho two seasons in a row with Darren Gibson and Phil Neville in midfield.

Breaking the top 6 isn’t impossible. If we recruit smartly, and make smart managerial appointments it will happen, every piece of evidence in the history of the league recently says that to be the case. Acquisition of talent beats pure money being chucked around.

We need to shake off this stupid recent habit of following some decent building with a relegation season. Silva seemed to a stave that off last season to avoid the fate of Koeman. It’s not wildly incomprehensible that we could be looking at the season after next being back in the Europa league with a manager in situ, a squad that has had the deadwood removed and players that know the managers philosophy inside out. We’ve already in recent weeks smacked both of the Europa league finalists at home and played well away against them. Why couldn’t we be in a position given a lucky draw of winning the Europa? Or picking up a domestic cup?

It’s not beyond the realms of possibility at all. We have everything in place to make the top 6 a top 7 if Brands and Silva execute better than their counterparts in Leicester or Wolves. If that happens then every team int hat top bracket had had some form of success recently as they’ve waxed and waned in fortune. There’d be absolutely no reason that wouldn’t happen to us.

You make some very good points... Let's hope we get quality additions in over the summer and really kick on.

Btw, my "what you're having comment" was a nod to your optimism amidst a tough few weeks for us blues, nothing else

There's scope to get back. It will take a huge transformation though. We need a stadium that can be sweated for maximum profit and we need new owners to buy into the new stadium and invest heavily. I still think there'd be willing major investors despite all the stuff about FFP. The game will always evolve. I just have no expectation we can even get a stadium in place.

Glad to see you’re only a left winger in words and not in action. What rich person do you want to buy you shiny trophies the most?

Football is a massive industry. If you want your team to be a success you need serious money. In any case, it's an industry ultimately that's controlled by fans.
