1995-2020 = the longest barren spell without silverware in Everton's history

And yet other clubs have been ran much, much, much worse and have won stuff.

There is no link.

We have been in a position a few times to at least have a go at winning stuff during this time, we failed to do so because our managers were not strong/good enough.

Any manager at the right end of the table for 11 years should really be looking to win a trophy of some sort in that time.

Your attitude of shrug the shoulders and these things happen is fair enough, but I honestly prefer accountability. I don't think our demise from winning trophies to where we are now happened by chance. Decisions were made, wrong decisions. There has been a lack of vision from this club at the very top for my entire life time. You get what you deserve when this is the case.

It's happened because the club in the last quarter of a century has been run by amateurs who've squandered the greatest money spree there's ever been at the disposal of Everton in its history.

This has been the club's most historic failure. These people completely and utterly missed the PL bus and have left us all standing at the bus stop, in the rain, waiting decades for some mate's used transit van to turn up and take us to a party in a disused dock on the banks of the Mersey, on the promise of a "good time".
Meanwhile, a coach load of loud mouthed, flag waving self righteous cultist zombies ride past, splashing us with the muddy, dubiously smelling waters of their success.
Good post, Dave. Wish it was all untrue, but sadly, you are spot on.

I'm not shrugging anything but we were winning some trophies in the 80's. That's 35 years ago! How far do we go back to apportion some blame?

Wimbledon 94 was our nadir (certainly in recent-ish times) and yet we won the cup next season after the worst league start in our history. 2 or 3 years later we were surviving on the final day again so winning a trophy is not really linked to a vision or plan or indeed a club being in a stable position. Wigan won a cup and went down, Leicester did (I think...it was pretty close anyway) and clubs like Portsmouth did not have a great masterplan, they just won a trophy.

Our vision (or lack of) was totally due to the circumstances and the vision to me seems to have been to stay solid, entrench ourselves into the league again (as opposed to flirting with relegation) and go from there. It's not a fun vision but it's one that has generally worked. Leeds United had a vision, Portsmouth had a vision, look where it got them.

In that time we are one of only 7 clubs to be ever present in the premier league. Again nothing to celebrate as such but it shows that we had some kind of vision and plan.

A trophy is nice, we all want one, all football fans do. It really does not signify that the club is well run or even doing well though.

No not at all.

Have you just read that the way you want to suit an agenda? Very strange and kopite like.

The blame is being pointed out but Dave in his initial post.
How many times do I have to prove to people on here that I'm not a bloody kopite?

I keep seeing 'people who accept mediocrity and don't demand enough' are partly to blame for Everton's failures on here and I don't get the logic. We can't control the team.
...there's two sides to the equation though: the other side is a support base that's allowed it to unfold.

No way the fanbase of Arsenal, United, Liverpool, Spurs etc would sit back and take the pummelling we have. Not without hitting back and getting some shift in fortune.

Our fans have been all too comfortable basically sitting in a comfort zone just so long as a relegation season doesn't unfold. THAT is the truth of the matter. Our horizons shrank after the 1990s relegation scrapes. We have for too long allowed mediocrity to prevail when our peers would have had none of it.
This is what I mean. How is Dave not blaming fans?

We should be "all in " on the League Cup every year. That is our best chance in the short term to lift something.
Bigger picture hopefully things continue to evolve at the board level , but the bottom line is if you are not regularly in Europe / CL....you're not able to compete consistently.

And it's not just us. It's more noticeable because we're Liverpool's local rivals but EVERY SINGLE TEAM outside the big 6 has the same problem as us. The gap is too big now.

I'm of an age that I am now resigned to the following.

We will not win another trophy in my lifetime, and the 'new stadium' will remain a mirage.

I'm living on the memories from the 1960's and the mid eighties.
:(

Just the Champions League really. Being in Europe doesn't really mean much.

Let’s just hope it continues to be not the league title. Honestly I’d take them winning the FA Cup every year for the next 5 years if it meant them staying away from the title.
That’s only because we have nothing! In the sixties and later the eighties when both sides were winning trophies, there was far less bitterness
on either side as we were too focussed on our own teams to give a toss about anything else!

I'd just like to see Everton lift a trophy in my lifetime.
Some fans are too spoilt.

Our best results come on days when Goodison park is rocking from kickoff to final whistle our worst results come on days when everyone is moaning.. the players are human a crappy atmosphere will effect them as will a rocking atmosphere, if our fans turned up buzzing to every game regardless of what happened in the last, we'd do a hell of a lot better points and wins wise. Guarantee.

Keane definitely agrees with that. Also, the latter half of the season, IIRC we were pretty good at home. Rotten away, but it always seems to be one or the other and I'd rather have Goodison be loud and up for it.
