Digne> baines at peak

A great replacement but Baines was epic and in his prime one of the best, Digne has much to do to get that good. Offensively quality. Defensively quality. Great passer, presser, runner, crosser, shooter, defender and corner taker, Baines had everything but height, luckily he had positional awareness so no worries..

Rare Baines had anything less than a good game. Hopefully Digne can replicate and maybe even surpass him, but it's a big ask. He has the tools though from we have seen so far.

Digne is right tits for sure. He got schooled by Traore this weekend which will happen.

Baines is / was the better defender. Digne is the better offensive player and he plays with a special joie de vive.

Cannot see Digne in blue in 2020 - 2021; will be the target of stoopid silly bids.

Might be eventually ....but sadly won't be with us !
If he's better than Baines at his peak ( which Digne will have to do for a couple of seasons ..) he won't stay at EFC

Baines for me just but as said he was always a bit suspect defending ,a great defender ? never .I saw Wilson et al and they were defenders but that is not the way it is played now .At this moment and with the blood still rushing from a win ,if Digne has found his Pienaar in Iwobi ,it is going to be a much closer call.

Baines was never a great defender. Not many full backs are in 'the modern game', when half their job is to play as a wing back. Digne is the same, but has time to improve his defending. Dignes attacking play is as good as Baines at his peak.

How highly did you rate Pienaar tho mate?

Genuine question. Because if we're going off your usual metric of goals / assists contributions he didnt get many of either

Pienaar was a >good< player for us. No more, no less. He wasn't ever in the top 5 in his position in the league, but he was a useful player. His work rate was important in a workmanlike Everton side under Moyes. I liked him.

He averaged a goal or an assist every 4.8 games for us across the two spells here. Bernard is averaging a goal or an assist every 7 games. The two are barely comparable. Pienaar was absolutely the better Footballer.

Right now, our expectations are higher than they were when Pienaar was here (although when we had Pienaar, we were a better side), so therefore we need to demand better from Bernard's position, irrespective of the 'relationship' he has with Digne - which clearly isn't valued all that highly by MS as he was swiftly dropped for Iwobi in our last 2 games.

Yes I agree, we'll struggle to keep him next year. He has a history of only staying places for a couple of years. However, he looks pretty happy at the moment so you never know being happy my be more important.

I've never got the Baines as a good defender shouts.Over a long period as a team we allow far too many crosses.Coleman is the same, good going forwards but doesn't defend nearly as well. Hibbert was a better defender until it came to reacting to crosses from the left, then he just fell asleep, can't remember the number of times he was beaten in the air at the far post.

All true. Hibbert was more of an 'old fashioned' fullback....a defender pure and simple. Whenever he had to go forward down the wing he was immediately out of his comfort zone. Even in such a short time since he finished, he would not make it in the Premiership today because of his lack of attacking instinct.

We are a far better side now than when Peinaar was playing. This is mostly down to Brands buy 'proper footballers'.
