If we beat Wigan and Chelsea (and neither are going to be anything near 'easy') then I think we will finish top 4 this season with no worries at all.

Heres the reasoning;

Howard has been awful all season and this will end with him improving or another keeper coming in.

The defence has been disjointed with all three right backs injured for long periods and also Heitinga having some very poor games.....

Gibson and Mirallas have had their injuries for the season....keep them fit and they improve our side immensely.

Fellaini will want to make up for the red card

Jelavic has been off form and Anichebe injured....

Massive number of penalties not given by referees....

We ALWAYS improve in january.

If we've had all this bad luck and are sitting 4th, win the next 2 and sitting 4th in January....I think we will take 4th....

Happy Xmas.

I always said to myself mate, we get into 30 points by Jan we have a GREAT chance of Top 4 and we are there now! Lets hope we push on a few gears in Jan, dont think we've hit our best form yet, but i do think we've had our bad spell of the season.

We've got an excellent opportunity, and agree with the OP pretty much line for line, especially the Tim Howard and debateable decisions parts....and yes, our per-season is all geared to a strong and sustained back half of the season. However, several other clubs are in better positions than expected and some have yet to start firing....I'm thinking West Brom/Swansea/Stoke and The ****e/Arsenal/Chelsea respectively....it's a very strange season all round.

The key to us getting top 4 is keeping our main players fit, not divesting any in January and keeping Goodison a fortress.

It's definitely do-able.

Had us to beat weat ham 2-1.beat wigan 2-0,and draw with chelsea 1-1,but dont agree that if we beat both that it would mean 4th place, just hope we are in euro places what ever it is by the last 3 games of the season as our last 2 away games are Liverpool and chelsea, west ham at home in between those 2.

The thing that worries me is weve had all the big teams at home already,so weve still got to chelsea, arsenal, utd, and the ****e, all of which well lose.

hoping it continues, agree with previous poster that I think we might have had our bad spell, and it really wasn't all that bad.do think we need a couple of loans during the window if we're to mount a challenge for the top four, and those loans need to be players who can seriously challenge for a starting place.

Putting on some immensely blue-tinted glasses, but what if:

We have repeatedly done better in the second half of a season than the first, what if we do actually step up a gear from here where do you think we can finish? If you think about the points differences we have made up in the past, when we have been languishing in the bottom half of the table at Xmas and then gone on to gain a number of places on our 2nd half form could we dare to dream that we might end up in a loftier position than 4th or 3rd?

City are 9 points ahead, Man Utd potentially 15 points ahead. I don't think we could catch Utd, but City might be doable. Now how much would that be worth to put one over the red****e and ****ty in the same season on a budget of next to eff all.

we can beat the ****e away and possibly arsenal as well. we just need to play them with no fear believing we are the better team. I agree the first half of the season was easier for us, then again, we've only had 8 home games, 4 of which included a usual derby loss, our bogey team in arsenal and the league leaders, as well as spurs and a newcastle team that finished 5th last season. Therefore after the chelsea home game we only have city left as the only loseable home game, with every other game realistically winnable. with more home games than away left the 2nd half suddenly looks a bit easier
