caretaker, great barrier reef, job, Queensland, Tourism

It's a tough one. Grey skies or blue? Icy pavements or white sand? Tube commute or a skip down the beach? Office job, or getting paid to lounge around on a tropical beach?
Tourism Queensland has created a new position, which, in their words, is the best job in the world: "Caretaker of the Island of the Great Barrier Reef".
The job involves living on one of 900 islands strung across the turquoise waters of the world's largest barrier reef. Accommodation in a three-bedroom house on Hamilton Island is included, as are return airfares and a A$150,000 salary (around £69,000).
Key responsibilities during the six-month contract include exploring the islands of the Great Barrier Reef and reporting back to the tourist office with blogs, pictures and media interviews. Oh, and cleaning the pool, which is attached to the house.
Applicants need to be over 18, but no other skills are required other than good communication and swimming skills, although candidates should have 'at least one year's relevant experience'. Whether this means a year's experience of lounging around on a tropical beach is unclear.
This is, of course, little more than a simple (and brilliant) PR coup. The job really will exist, but will serve as an excellent marketing tool for Queensland Tourism, rather than providing any benefit - other than increased tourist numbers - to the Great Barrier Reef.
But that's unlikely to put off applicants, who need to make a 60-second video outlining why they should get the job. A shortlist of 10 candidates will be flown out to Queensland for a final selection process, and the lucky winner will then be settled in to their new home.
The website, with full application details, is proving rather busy today...

We certainly do.

I'd be up for that solitairy thing though, although I'd be slightly edgy at doing a blog; mine would be dead boring.

Got up, went snorkelling, dried off and then got some sun. Went snorkelling.

Had rude thoughts about the twins off Fun House.

Snorkelled again.

it's not that solitary, there are resorts there and all that. you go on the trips from the resorts to visit some of the places, then you go into a hotel one evening with your sweater over your shoulders and approah the bird who would look best in oil for the next few days, then you ask her if she'd like to join you on your 'expedition' in your yacht/motor launch, as surely you would have one to do the exploring.

We went to the whitsunday's (Hamilton is part of the whitsunday group of islands) about 2 weeks ago. We didn't visit Hamilton though. My cousin lives on Hamilton... sigh.

Do you like it?

I started mine after sacking in College in December as an admin assistant in a hospital and really like it at the moment.

I don't dread getting up in the morning and the money for someone my age is great.

I've always said though, i would rather be happy then earn abit more money and be really unhappy.
Views?

If you can stick to that principal for most of your working life you will do well. Sometimes you just have to take the crap jobs for the money, just don't get yourself trapped. I've been lucky, I've worked for 34 years and can say only 5 of them were truly bad ones where I only stayed for the money. Good luck mate:D

I'm really not sure right now. It's a standard office job for the company my dad owns. The plan was for me to be here for the long-term but this morning I was made aware that in April I'll have been here for 5 years & the idea of doing the same thing for another 5 isn't very appealing so if that was to be the case I'd look at doing something else somewhere else.

We applied for a big contract recently which, if we get it, will probably change the business forever. We'd have to expand a huge amount really quickly & that would be a fresh challenge that I hope I'm able to get stuck into. Also, I'm doing a course in accounts now which, if I see it through to the end, would mean I'd get paid a hell of a lot more money for working a hell of a lot less hours so that sounds good too.

So in summary, I'm not as happy with my current job as I could be but if it changes like it looks like it's going to, I could well be

I'm unemployed at the moment, and things aren't looking that rosy on the old job front. The problem for me is that I've moved to a country in which I do not really speak the language. However, I am now enrolled on a full time course so things are progressing on that front. Still, it will takes a couple of years to master the language so god only knows what i can do in the meantime. :(
