To be fair, I can't see how World War III ever happens. Not because of the nuclear deterrent, but because world wars only ever happen when we are top of the table.

I suspect the world can breathe a sigh of relief.

It's an interesting question.

I guess it stems from the sense that several regional conflicts are all brewing (or ongoing) which have all has quite clear lines drawn in terms of sides/significant powers taking a side or supporting?

I think mass conscription of countries that don't currently have it (and haven't for decades or more) is the time, but that's from the perspective of living here.

Could on the flipside argue the second world war never actually ended if the criteria is lower than that, with proxy wars for supremacy and overthrowing of governments due to outside influences happening constantly

Maybe a Second Cold War is more appropriate for what we are seeing.
As @longers mentioned earlier, we are seeing more proxy wars with the major powers (except Russia) not having any direct boots on the ground but still pulling strings and supporting conflicts elsewhere.
