Defence spending to be increased, longer range weapons for Ukraine, developing a UK hypersonic missile by 2030, Argies buying F-16’s from Denmark….
Sunak talking up an election this year….. maybe not WW3 but feels like there’s a conflict coming to give the voters a distraction / generate some good old nationalist sentiment to aid the Tory’s….

The hypersonic is supposed to me immune to the presently available Patriot systems etc. Hence the fact that China and Russia have a model and the US and UK are racing to get theirs. Ukraine claim to shoot down the Russian model quite regularly. Makes you wonder what the fuss is about.ICBMs are another issue.

This is often what is said, but it really isn't true.

Any missile (any projectile, really) can be brought down however fast it is - all it requires is detecting it, seeing where it is headed, working out what time it gets there and having something that can shoot at it. All hypersonic weapons do is have a shorter time to allow interception, but it is possible (as the Ukrainians have proved with Patriot vs Kinzhal). The S-400 and S-500 would probably do the same vs Western hypersonics.

Have they though. I've looked for evidence of Patriot shooting down a Kinzhal.I'd love you to educate me on the system that'll intercept an ICBM.

If yThe question we have here, which has been raised a few times, is whether the Russians hypersonic missile(s) are actually what it says on the tin.

They may be shooting them down, and if that's the case, it does raise the issues of the missile's credibility. But in equal measure, we can question Ukraine's claims.

Huge project in Sri Lanka too, basically an entirely new commercial city on reclaimed land off the coast of Colombo, the centre piece being a new deep water port, ostensibly for shipping but the Chinese Navy regularly drops by.

They've also constructed (in a JV with a large Sri Lankan group) a 2nd port in Hambantota along the south east coast.

If you go to virtually any country in Africa, you'll find huge projects being carried out by China State Construction, as well as renewable energy/water projects being built and commissioned by heavily subsidised Chinese companies.

They're making friends everywhere: South Asia, Middle East, Africa. It's no wonder nerves are getting frayed over their growing influence.

If you read up on China's 'belt and road' initiative, you may first see lots of large infrastructure projects, however if you dig deeper it's a lot murkier.

A fair few of these projects are now appearing to be duds, while the countries are laboured with large debts to China. This is where coercion will start!

The US has a system (GMD) designed specifically to intercept and kill ICBM’s in the exo atmosphere (mid-course).

But any ICBM can be tracked and intercepted in its terminal phase with systems such as UK’s sea viper, US THAAD and Patriot, Italy’s SAMP/T and not forgetting Israel’s David’s sling (Arrow2 and 3).

You can't have looked very hard then because there are what appears to be credible evidence over the internet.

As for intercepting an ICBM, that is often claimed to be impossible - but all I would point out there is that every nation with ICBMs uses decoys mixed in with the real warheads, which kind of suggests this is not actually impossible.

I've obviously seen claims of Kinzhal being brought down,but then I've also seen claims of 95 % of Russian missiles being downed. The same as I've seen claims of both Ukraine and Russia throwing tens of hundreds of infantry into meat grinder situations. Yet in our world of body cams drone footage and all manner of mobile devices I've yet to see any footage of the phenomenon.
