Defence spending to be increased, longer range weapons for Ukraine, developing a UK hypersonic missile by 2030, Argies buying F-16’s from Denmark….
Sunak talking up an election this year….. maybe not WW3 but feels like there’s a conflict coming to give the voters a distraction / generate some good old nationalist sentiment to aid the Tory’s….

A conflict only comes when the opposition think they can win or you’re not bothered. Strong defence mechanisms deter aggression. It’s good to see us being specific in developing the new technology weapons both of defence and attack. Strong military deterrence does what it says on the tin…If Ukraine had kept their nuclear arsenal there would never have been a Russian invasion, the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives and the destruction of infrastructure……

Russia and China’s main attacking mechanism is to politically destabilise the democratic west hence the unbridled financial support of the likes of Trump, Johnson and Farage plus the pushing of false narratives all over the internet.

that's a good one to add to my film re-watch list: Wag the Dog....

China are also trying to stop themselves relying on the west. They are starting to go to Africa to build their own mines so they don't have to buy off western countries.
Not only Africa.

Chinese state owned construction companies are involved in massive infrastructure projects all over the middle east.

Roads, railways, bridges etc. All getting built at cost (or lower?) In exchange for better cooperation. The UAE air force is probably getting knocked back by the US for F35s after a quiet word from Israel. China apparently in pole position to step in with their own 5th gen fighter. (No idea how capable it is)

The days of cheap tat from China is a bit of a tired stereotype, they can produce items with build quality that runs more western manufacturers close, getting the overseas giants like Apple/Volvo/Audi to have production there is basically a free apprenticeship for a huge workforce. Sure, they still produce 'cheap tat' for certain markets, but it's no longer the default.

Yep exactly. They have also been snooping around the pacific islands. They are building some ports for some of those islands.

Huge project in Sri Lanka too, basically an entirely new commercial city on reclaimed land off the coast of Colombo, the centre piece being a new deep water port, ostensibly for shipping but the Chinese Navy regularly drops by.

They've also constructed (in a JV with a large Sri Lankan group) a 2nd port in Hambantota along the south east coast.

If you go to virtually any country in Africa, you'll find huge projects being carried out by China State Construction, as well as renewable energy/water projects being built and commissioned by heavily subsidised Chinese companies.

They're making friends everywhere: South Asia, Middle East, Africa. It's no wonder nerves are getting frayed over their growing influence.
