I do wonder about a lot of this talk, terrifying people is how to stay in power and our rulers (here, in the US, Russia, Iran, and everywhere else) are so terrible and leading us down such a bad path in terms of the climate that they’ll never stay in charge with legitimate means.

agree, with the advancements in weapons and technology it doesn't seem possible for that sort of war to happen again.

I think that's the most likely reason why it could happen... Complacency.

We assume it won't happen so we don't take the steps to ensure it won't happen. At the end of the day, a country's cheapest and most expendable resource is its people.

We have mistakenly taken a view that trench warefare is a thing of the past but Ukraine has showed that it is not.

It would take a great power conflict with multiple lesser powers involved for it to be World War III, and it would have to be sustained. If it's a six-week limited war like many in the late 1800s, that doesn't count.

Regional conflicts are global business as usual. The US was in Vietnam during the Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War, and AFAIK no one tried to label the situation WWIII. US-Russia is automatically WWIII, US-China is probably WWIII, and anything involving two other major powers may or may not devolve into that.
