Transfer Rumour Wilmar Barrios

There are reasons to be sceptical. He needs to come in and become a top 5 defensive midfielder in this league, that’s how good Gana is. Considering a different country different pace of the league. It will be remarkable if he can achieve anywhere close to TOP 5 in terms of stats.

....I really think it’s like comparing apples with pears because Barrios is a different type. From what I have seen, Barrios isn’t busy like Gueye, he sits in front of the back four in a similar way that Carsley and Barry did.

I assume Silva/Brands have a team model and perhaps a Barrios type of player better suits how they want to play. It’s not a question of who’s the better footballer, it’s a question of who better suits the playing style.

Sometimes I wished I'd had a gap year in South America watching football and no sense of shame in saying latin American names with huge Spanish/ Portuguese embellishment on their pronunciation whilst being interviewed. Then I could spout cojones about players no one else had seen or translate the back page of the Brazilian newspaper and be paid for it.

People do that on here for free. They just didn't do the gap year.

Absolutely this. If we, mere mortals can see the difference between the two, rest assured so can Silva and Brands.

It's not just that that's the issue, though.

Gana's always there. Whatever people say of his passing - and the criticism is fair mostly - he's on attackers like a rash most of the time.

Barrios is more about positioning, from what I've seen. I could see him easily collecting yellow cards (even reds) because he likes to lunge in and the pace of the Premier League compared to Argentina is obviously a different level.

I think we need both, our problem right now is we have full backs bombing on, but nobody in midfield drops back into defence to cover like Barry did.

Sounds like this is what barrios does and that's what we need to replace schneiderlin who has now become a liability. But we also need a gueye in other games, where we need to keep winning the ball back. They'd hardly ever pay together for me, only in the rally big matches where we'd need to keep the ball.

I'm still unsure as to whether the transfers are dependant on eachother either, we've been linked with barrios since the summer, well before we had any interest in gueye.

A midfield five of gueye, gomes, barrios, Davies and a powerhouse like a cheaper doucoure would give us everything we need, with schneiderlin, Mccarthy and besic shipped off.

That's how I hope it looks after next Jan.

I'm just going to say he has a 'Rolls Royce engine' because it sounds like I know what I am talking about when in reality I don't know what that means or who this guy is.
Hahahahah I never have a clue what it means either, seen it used to describe a wide variety of players

I don’t think Davies is good enough yet
He may be in time but I don’t see him as a top 4/6 midfielder which is where we are aiming for

Doesn't sound like the calibre of player we need, this dude..

If he was 19/20 and costing us half of what's being touted, sure, but 25 and still playing in South America? No bueno.

Stop talking sense! It's about tackling and pass % and nothing else!

I think characteristic difference should not be an excuse not to compare like for like. One run faster the other does not mean thier primary job differs. It’s exactly the same just the choice and the preference to execute it differs.

They are after all a defensive midfielder at the end of the day they will be judge on breaking up play, tackling, ball retrieval, ball recycle, bread and butter stuff.

That's why I'd have him as fifth choice. He's still young, he can be one of those squad players for years, fergie used to do it with players like phill Neville who were happy to play that part.

PSV (and Brands) are known for finding gems in South America. So I have confidence in his scouting network. Especially as so far all his signing have looked at the least passable
