Will Barkley reach the heights Gerrard did?

Ask me this time next year.
He's had one good season and now one bad season. Need a reaction and improvement from the lad next Season and hopefully it'll be the Ross Barkley that'll we'll end up seeing for years to come.

Next season is pivotal, sink or swim. Gerrard was doing it week in week out by this stage in Ross's career. Ross doesn't seem to have the same winning mentality as Gerrard or his self belief. As others have said he goes missing which as much as I hate Gerrard it's something that you can't really say he ever did. I think the real danger for Ross is that if he went to a club like Chelsea he could just disappear altogether like Rodwell did at City. Big big season for him next year.

I genuinely maintain that Barkley would benefit from a dose of LSD. His subconscious brain needs rinsin out man, it's clearly soaked up too much nonsense over the years and it's really slowing him down.

The footballing brain thing cannot be stated enough really - and, though it pains me to say it, just general brain cell population.

I see that as a major hinderance to his ability to progress tbh - I know Martinez has messed around with his position/role a bit (all in the name of making him a 'complete player', no doubt), sometimes to the point of negligent misuse of him - but when he plays atm he looks a bit like he is struggling to comprehend and then implement advice/instructions into his game!

Hopefully the shape-up of our team next year will mean he gets the space to do his thang and build on whatever that is. All this criticism and speculation is really harsh of course... and I do think he'll be a really good player, at least... hopefully he will hit dem media-hyperbole heights.

I disagree tbh, Gerrard was passed his mid 20s before he stood out.

McCallister, Alonso, Hammann were ahead of him in the pecking order.

In Contemporary football young players don't and won't get the same opportunities at a young age, the stakes are to high and dependes on your philosphey, this could well have been Ross's break through season if moyes was still in charge and even then may have only played 10 games. An important question in his development should be why he wasn't given a chance sooner and who's fault is that, he did have bad injuries if my memory is correct.

Anyway world class without doubt.

He's 21 FFs.

Oh yeah and he's not as big a narcissist as Stevie Me... so he won't have that same drive to turn up when the cameras are on him. T*t.

The only thing that's slowing him down is his fat arse. So much potential but for me is he's to bottom to heavy.

The myth that Gerrard was balls til was mid-twenties is junk too. He started 50 games in his third season at 20/21, won PFA young player of the year, the FA Cup, League Cup and Uefa Cup.

You might well be right mate, but you googled and poured over Steven Gerrards careers stats somewhere in that post.

Come back to the flock mate.

Think Barkley has more natural talent but Gerrard had a certain will to win. Barkley looks absolutely confused with the ball at his feet sometimes..

I honestly can't figure out where his position will wind up being. Maybe straight ahead of McCarthy and behind a #10 brought in this summer?

Had to make sure of stats as I'm not near the memory skills of beardo. Felt dirty hitting his wiki page without the intention of vandalising it. Him being good back then was all the more annoying to me as we were absolute turd

I think that he needs to play deeper. He should be doing the box to box thing, running at teams from deep positions etc. He is not a No.10 (well not yet).
