Why is the prem so cack.

Why is the premier league so piss poor? We've been gash this season, we've lost 10 games, yet find ourselves 3 points off 5th place.

It just seems that over the last few years the prem has gone downhill.

People dream of becoming footballers for the insane financial rewards and self promotion now, rather than having heart and desire to represent a clubs ethos and fans.

It was every kids dream to play for the club you supported when I was little.

That has long gone, and the game is far poorer imo.

I certainly subscribe to the belief that the general standard of football right now is at a much lower ebb than it was compared to say, 10-15 years ago.

In terms of the Premier League, I don't know if it's just because they are a bit of an unknown quantity, but a team like Sheffield United should never be troubling the top places in a good. They are just a hardworking, well drilled unit with very little quality in it. We have been largely shambolic yet could very realistically finish in the European places.

I don't think Liverpool are a special side, they are very good but I don't consider them a patch on the best teams this league has had yet they will outpoint all of those sides this season. They are a very good team in a very poor league at the moment.

Sheffield United aren’t really an anomaly though. There have been a shedload of newly promoted sides who have finished in the top 7/8 in the Premier League era. There was nearly always a “surprise package” from the promoted teams.

I’m not old enough to vividly remember the newly promoted Newcastle, Blackburn and Forest sides who each finished in the top 4 in the early 90s but I certainly remember Sunderland and particularly the excellent Ipswich town side (Finidi George, Matt Holland and Marcus Stewart) finishing amongst the European places around the milennium.

Reading did something similar about 10 years ago too when they had Doyle, Sidwell and Stephen Hunt snapping everyone and finished about 7th or 8th after coming up IIRC.

I don’t think Sheffield United finishing 6th or 7th would be evidence of a poor Premier League season, I guess, is what I’m saying.

It's certainly not as bad as 15/16. I know teams likes Manchester United and Chelsea are in transition but I think the smaller sides are stronger than they ever have been and are more likely to take points from bigger teams. The reason the rs will win it is because of city's arrogance in not signing a defender.

The sad thing is, if we'd have made the right signings last summer, we'd be challenging for the Europa League, possibly even the CL

Because most teams want to either play with a “philosophy” which doesn’t suit the players they have or can readily bring in. Emulating Guardiola for example only works when you have players capable of producing consistently impressive feats. West Ham for example are great at spending lots of money on a rag tag bunch of mercenaries who can’t play like how they want.

Many of the others on the other hand go the other way and play as absolute spoilers time wasting from the first minute (cough Burnley cough) and kicking teams about the place. English football needs a middle ground and I think only us (recently) Wolves and probably Crystal Palace have that. Just my opinion like.

I think there's a lot of nostalgia getting floated around in here.

The idea that players were so much better 10-15 years ago is one i've been hearing since I was about 8 when my dad was telling me about all the great players I don't remember, and then my grandad would say 'no they were good but not as good as the players you don't remember'. The same will happen again, in 10 years time people will be saying 'remember when there used to be class players like De Bruyne, Van Dijk, Aguero etc?'.

Part of it is the increased availability of matches involving foreign teams, and part of it is the increasing number of players coming over here. Instead of seeing a player 15 times in their entire career and declaring them to be incredible, we now see them 15 times in a season, and see all their faults, and their difficulties in adapting to a new league. If someone like Pogba had stayed at Juventus people would be waxing lyrical about him like they did about Nedved or Redondo when I was at school. Because he's come over here and not done as well he doesn't have the same aura.

Too many average, overpaid players now just because their name is not along the lines of Arthur Higginbottom. It would need to be Athurio Highingibotham

Think it's better when everyone is closer together, it means every point is vital and wins actually move you up the table pretty quickly. Rather not have the kopites miles ahead like.

It might not be a case of the Prem being cack, but rather a leavening out of style and the approach to the game.

I am frankly bored with watching the first 10 minutes of live games. Unless a goal is scored, it's all the same. Second halves are when things really start to get interesting, when players begin to tire and play becomes stretched.

There are plenty of quality players knocking about and claiming there is some kind of deficit compared to 10 or 20 years ago is a combination of rose tinted glasses, a lack of detailed knowledge and the better in my day mindset which every single generation is eventually guilty of.

A massive contributor has been the Premier League TV money which now considerably bridges the gap that Champions League money used to give those teams who regularly competed in Europe. Not only does it increase buying power but it helps clubs keep hold of players that they wouldn't have been able to a few years ago. Most PL clubs are among the richest in Europe.

There has also been considerable investment in a lot of clubs facilities and methods whereas in the fairly recent past a lot of top flight clubs still had comparably rudimentary setups compared to higher achieving clubs.
