Why did the club spend 5m on Oviedo?

Everton seem to have an old enough rule bar a couple exeptions few and far between -
we are about the only side without a youngster or two forming part of the first choice squad -
so Oviedo you better get older quickly and hope your skills improve by watching experienced players like Neville showing you how not to play def mid

You do realise that not every single player in our squad can play holding midfield right?

The ammount of people who mention neville as to why every single one of our subs doesn't get game time if baffling.

It's not him who's keeping Oviedo on the bench it's Baines and Pienaar and what is generally considered one of the finest left hand side partnerships in england.

Young player. Left footed. Good enough for Left mid and Left back. International. Reasonable fee. Baines sat around for near 18 months watching Lescott beast the LB slot. Now hes first on the teamsheet for us and has pushed on for international caps.

i just believe Baines should not have been sitting around for 18 months - he was clearly too good for that but too young for Everton - only got his chance when Lescott left - given more opportunities who knows where he might have been by now -
benchsitting in my humble opinion plays a very limited part in the developement of a young player -
if he is not ready for first team duties put him out on loan -
how can you expect him to fill the boots of a first team player if he has not had sufficient exposure before he is suddenly called on in an emergency ? forward thinking is what i call it -
you need rotation on your bench - it has become essential in the modern game - otherwise you will be caugt with your pants on your knees when you least want it -
like having to play an inexperienced youngster in a FA Cup Final - should you have a few injuries\suspensions in your last game before the big one

Baines played pretty much all of the season before we sold Lescott, like.

And as for if he's not in the first team he should be on loan, wtf. So we don't need a bench or cover at all?

I'd agree with this usually, but you say where he might have been now? He's the best in the League in his position and I think Moyes has blooded him perfectly.

Sometimes you have to treat them mean to keep them keen, and there's nothing better for a Manager to make a player sit on the bench and make them try even harder to get into the side.

Even the Brightest Blooms need the Sun and the Rain, if you know what I mean.

The only ways to get him game time is to drop Pienaar, drop Baines, play him miles out of position, or send Pienaar to the right wing and play Oviedo on the left.

I can understand why Moyes is reluctant to do any of those.

Perfect opportunity right now if we can get to 60 w/o conceeding....

Moyes was lukewarm on Baines in his first year for sure, which seems ridiculous in hindsight.
Joleon was an absolute beast at that time though. Even though he's obv not a left back he was still running the show IIRC.
