Whose fault - Howard, Osman -- or Martinez?

Didn't something exactly like this happen in a preseason game? Osman tapping the ball back not far enough to Robles and the opposition scoring? It might well have been Martinez's first game in charge (Austria Vienna).

If it was I bet that moment was indelibly inked on Martinez's mind and he's told Ossie to be aware of what's around him if he comes back for the ball from the GK.

Lessons unlearned are even more difficult to take.

Having watched the vid about a dozen times, no doubt in my mind Osman is 1005 culpable, must have in dreamland when the ball was passed to him. Why stand still? surely should have moved towards howard to receive the pass?

In the Vid Howard said something to Osman, wonder what it was, do not think it was nice!. Osman knew he had messed up, could see that on his face. Notice players were going to Howard but not to Osman.

Only just had a look at it now, oh Ossie, what are you doing? :-(

I just hope they are all nice and pissed off for Southampton now!

Should only be playing when every other option is injured, or the last 20/25 minutes of a game when the other side is knackered.

I think in his own mind he believes he's Iniesta and can screen, turn and pass whenever/wherever he wants.

Well his fantasy has cost us again.

First of all, I was disappointed with Martinez for leaving Barkley out in that particular game as he was still on a high from the Swansea match. It was noticeable before the sending off that we had no threat from just behind Lukaku which would have killed a poor side like Sunderland. When he did finally come on, it was all desperation stuff, which meant he had to resort to shots from 30-35 yards. It was a lot more hurried than it would have been if we were comfortable in the game.

Regarding the actual mistake, both of them were to blame. The main portion of the blame has to lie with Howard though because he should never have passed it to a player with someone right behind him right in front of goal. There was no margin for error. Osman messed up yes, and he should have just stuck the ball out of play. Howard then had a rush of blood by going to ground, but you don't have time to think in those situations about the consequences, you're just trying your hardest to prevent a goal.

The Osman bashing on here is laughable though. He shouldn't be starting games but he has had a big impact this season and yesterday was the first time it didn't pay off since our good run started. Barkley was absolutely dire against Villa away and it was Osman who won us the game. Against Stoke and Fulham at home it also paid off and Osman made a significant contribution, getting a goal in one of the games.

Some people just need to accept that some key people involved yesterday made mistakes. It happens. We still gave it a good go in the second half but it didn't quite come off. We've rode our luck in other games this season, but no one dwells on how unlucky the opposition were. Palace should have beaten us, we did well to beat Man United and Arsenal nearly beat us in the last minute. But we came through in those matches to our credit.

We will see how strong a team we are in the next 2 games. I reckon they are our 2 toughest games of the season now due to circumstances. A few suspensions and injuries starting to add up and Southampton will be a very hard game.

4 points from those 2 would be a good return.

I have to disagree with you regarding Howard. The player was not that close so the pass was acceptable, Osmanshould be more aware of whats around him yet he still had plenty of time to play back to howard or move to his left/right with the ball. That probably would have happened if he controlled the ball but he didn't so he has to take 100% blame. If Howard stayed upright and still conceded he would have been slaughtered by the crowd. There is no blame attached to anyone bar Osman.

Yes, Osman has had some good moments but in many games this season and last he was invisible.

Yesterday he fumbled the ball before losing it.
