Who was your hero growing up?

In the 50s it was Jimmy O'Neill, probably cos his name was similar to mine and I was a goalie as a kid. Then it was 'Dirty Dave', then it was the
Golden Vision and still is now.
What is very interesting about this Thread is, that you can put a rough age to each post, and by knowing how old someone is, and with a bit of revision you can understand just why they are so uncaring, rude and brave of course.

Neville Southall. He was from North Wales, I wrote a letter to him when I was about ten and he replied, and he was the best in the world at the time.

Growing up, it had to be Bob Latchford, in more recent years Tim Cahill for his unswerving commitment to the Blue cause.

Joe Royle was my first Everton hero. He was younger (only 20, I think) than Lukaku is now when he scored 20 odd goals during the 69/70 championship season. Was badly hit by injuries which hampered him severely over his career immensely, but on his day he was a beast of a player.

Strange this, but Eric Cantona, mentioning him in another thread has brought me here. He had it all, a creative genius, an absolute nutter too. Some of his goals, flicks and passes were out of this world. We didn't exactly have a lineup of heroes in our ranks in the 90s.

Ian Wilson. Signed from Leicester.
The Star described him as a "midfield ace", and he was, especially when deputising at left-back.

Plus he signed my programme once. I wasn't looking for autographs, I was waiting for a mate and just happened to have my programme in my hand.

Showed his legendary anticipation again.
