Who let Everton/Koeman down?

I know why don't we do a "Leeds"and spend crazy money on overpriced players just to satisfy the this forum. Or..instead have a sound plan - get the manager you want the DOF you need and build on solid ground. Some of you on here would pay 50m on sissoko just so we can say we did it. Madness and brainless and thankfully your not in charge.

Nope . No one I've seen has suggested 'doing a Leeds'. The problem is a failure to meet the managers minimum requirements . Not necessarily big name big price players but players capable of addressing the problem areas in the team.As I've already said if you don't provide the craftsman with materials he requests you generally don't get the finish you'd hoped for.

I would include Lukaku in the list of people being let down, he obviously committed to stay on the strength of some promises. The most likely was that the squad would improve and challenge for trophies.
The Board run the club, they have to carry the can when things go wrong. Things have gone wrong here and not just in the final few days of the window. The writing was on the wall with the early rejections and it was at that point measures should have been put in place to ensure we came out of the window stronger than we went in.
We sold one of the best young prospects to a team who are much better than us and bought a 32 year old, albeit a good 32 year old. We spent £30 million on a player who will have to be at his best to get in the team. We bought a second choice goal keeper and uncovered a gem in Gana.
We didn't cover any of the positions where we are exposed.
Surely we sat down prior to the window opening and set out what we needed and had some idea of who we would take and how much they were likely to cost. That didn't come across in our dealings.
If we did do that and lost our way or if we didn't do it at all then someone should be held to account.
Normally in these situations someone from the club would come out and explain that we got it wrong but that lessons had been learned and that robust measures had been put in place and that this couldn't happen again. Unfortunately we are Everton and I for one believe that we will be running around like headless chickens come the January window.

True, but look at what the actual problems in the team last season were:

goalkeeper - Steklenburg is, on the first three games at least, an improvement
lack of leadership / coaching in defence - Williams provides the first, Koeman the second; we already look a lot better than at any point last season
lack of control in midfield - if Gana keeps playing like he has been we will struggle to hang onto him next summer
lack of directness - Bolasie addresses this, though not as much as the managerial change does
lack of a forward - the one failure of this window, though I can understand why it might have been difficult to get someone in if Lukaku wasn't being sold; people will move to the likes of Arsenal to be backup but it is a hard sell to get someone in of sufficient calibre when they know they will be a backup to Rom.

There are criticisms of the way the club has acted this summer, but we are in a better position now than we were at the start of it. I am also not sure that, given the evident quality of Davies et al, that not spending millions to put players in the way of their development is a bad thing.

Not arguing at all with that general assessment . However there are still obvious and major problem areas , the lack of creativity in centre mid position and as you admit the attacking options . There is also a distinct lack of depth and quality in certain areas . Furthermore Koeman himself said he'd be disappointed without further reinforcements. I wasn't asking or expecting vast sums of money expended ,isn't that meant to be Walsh's strength anyway, I just would have liked the managers not unreasonable expectations met, as they apparently were at Soton. There is also the fact that this situation seem to reoccur every season , this suggests to me a deep lying problem that needs sorting.

I think you're right to be cautious of us doing a Leeds, and it's best for us to be careful by not just throwing money at stuff, but, Chelsea and Man City did just that.

As a result, I feel the real improvements will occur when Moshiri has his own people installed in the board after upping his 49.9% stake.

A backup striker for Lukaku is the one big miss, but the central midfield creativity thing is probably a problem that existed because of how Martinez had us playing (and how teams played against us). A front three of Bolasie / Lukaku / Deulofeu with Barkley joining in would make the central midfielders we have now look a lot more creative.

Perhaps.

I'd like to think though - if he is as good a businessman as is claimed - that he has looked at the club and realized that he could save a fortune and be successful just by supporting the people we have in place now, and allowing them to continue identifying, recruiting and developing young players.

The owners of Chelsea and City came in at a time when it made a big difference and overnight they could compete with United for the big money signings.Given the influx of TV money that has made most Prem clubs "rich",we just missed the boat by a few years.

And to do this you pay way over the odds for players who are largely unproven as such doing a Leeds

So in other words you recruit a top quality manager and fail to provide him with what he asks for cos you can't afford it,why bother? May as well have gone for a lesser (and cheaper ) manager and instructed him 'just don't get relegated.' I wonder how long Koeman will stick around if we fail him again? Ambition ey.

Robinho cost Man City £33 million in 2008 money. How much do you think a signing like that would have cost this year? Maybe £80 million? Very high odds that we would not get our money's worth, either.
