When Everton made you cry

Strangely, my memories are mainly tears of sadness not joy. And I'm old enough to recall the era of the big five when we ruled.

1966 when we went 2-0 down to wednesday - I even uttered the words 'I'm gonna support Liverpool'. Forgive me, I was ten.

1967 at Goodison when Bally scored against Liverpool. 'What's our name???'

1967 at the unforgettable match against Forest in the quarterfinal. Jimmy Husband scored twice. Ian Storey Moore won it in the dying minutes. I was in floods as we left the ground.

1984 when Souness got the goal that won the Milk Cup at Maine Road. Gutted.

1984 at wembley when we won against Watford. There was a guy standing next to me shouting '14 years!! 14 years of hurt!! 1984, the year of the Rat!!!' I filled up as it dawned on me that we were back and the world was trembling at our new strength.

I'm too long-in-the-tooth now to cry in sadness. I'll do that for family. Say for my father - a lifelong blue who adored Tommy Lawton and Dave Hickson - slowly succumbing to old age.

But I will shed tears of joy again for the blues - I know it. Maybe in the next round of the cup. Maybe in x years when Alan Irvine guides us to glory again. I don't know. But we will make them all quake in fear again. Believe.

I also remember when I was 12 or 13 - a relatively new Blue - and I cried buckets when Alex Young was sold after Fred Pickering had been bought from Blackburn to replace him :(

I think your memory is playing tricks on you. Pickering arrived around '65 (remember he was injured for the '66 FA Cup run)

Alex Young left in '68

I DIDN'T cry in '85 on the last day of the season when we thumped QPR and won the league - I was pissed off though cos couldn't get in to Goodison(n) - listened to game on the radio in car!

2 years later I was crying when we beat Luton on last day and watched Reidy, Ratcliffe and co doing the lap of honour with the trophy(y) What an achievement that was with the squad we had that season - ALAN HARPER - TOP MAN!!

My very first game at White Hart Lane in 1958. We lost 10-4 !
When a team has already scored 8/9 goals and the fans are chanting for another it tends to stay with you.

I was only 5 then, but when I started supporting a team and - living in north London - it was Spurs. The year (or was it two years?) after they won the double Everton won the league and I was smitten. Up until then I had just gone with the flow and supported one of the two local teams (the other being Arsenal of course) but I didn't like being the same as the rest of them.

I've done some very rash and stupid things in my life and there have been times when I thought switching to the Blues was one of them but, like most supposedly stupid things I've done, it turned out to be for the best! (y)

A couple of seasons ago, can't remember which, after beating our loveable red neighbours, walking along Upper Gwladys yelling ' and if, you know, yer 'istory' at the top of my voice there were a few tears of emotion. Best feeling in the world.

I get a tear in my eye evrytime we score the hair stands on end the goosebumps an i get tears streamin down my face dunno why its the same when i hear z cars

When Gary McAllister scored that last minute free kick for Liverpool to win the derby 3-2 at Goodison. I think it was 1999 and I had a tear in my eye.

Also (strange one this) but I think it was only the F.A. Cup 4th round back in 1992 I think but we were trailing 1-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and we were awarded a 2nd half penalty. I was jumping around the room convinced we would score and turn it around... until my hero Tony Cottee stepped and sidefooted it straight at Kevin Hitchcock. I was bawling after that.
