What if an Everton player came out?

Its only the media who want homosexual footballers to 'come out' so they can fill their papers with uninteresting junk. I don't believe theres a need for it. Whatever people wish to do in their personal lives is there own business. Who actually cares.

Some commentators would have to watch what they say as terms like "slotting in behind the striker" or "he likes to play from the back" would take on whole new meanings.

Its been done before so who cares. Our hometown guy Robbie Rogers (who played for Columbus Crew, Stevenage, and now with Landon Donovan at LA Galaxy) came out as the first gay in US men's professional sports.

Justin Fashanu from Norwich came out in 1990...

so really...nothing to see here.

The former waited until he was retired from the game to come out, the latter killed himself.

Nothing to see here...

Just worth repeating this little exchange for those who still don't understand why it's brave for the gay players to come out.

If an Everton player came out as gay it would be the same to me as any other person coming out. I'd wish them well, admire their courage, and nothing else would change in how I see them.

Anything where you mock somebody's sexuality is far from harmless mate. It's attitudes like that which need changing, just like 'casual racism'.

I agree with this. I think the vast majority of people who use derogatory words for black/gay people, to give the main examples, in their everyday language are not directly being racist/homophobic but are definitely not helping the situation.

You want it to be at the point where basically kids grow up and its not so obvious that they should think that other person is different in any sort of a bad/lesser way. That basically they dont see that this is a common view held in the world.

Its only a small change for each person to stop using such terms, but for me eventually it can make a big difference.

Missing the point.

A person's sexuality isnt something to discuss politically on forums, in the media or what not. It really is nothing to see by continuing the discussion you only perpetuate the myth that this is a big deal. WHOOAA someone is gay AND they are a public figure? who cares. Move on.

I'd like to see a few footballers come out. Primarily for the torment it would cause "The Kop"....they would agonise for weeks before a high profile match about how to treat this knowledgeably, with respect, as befits the best fans in the world etc....... but then explode into some barrage of hate filled abuse on the day as they inevitably fail to show any restraint, self control, or humanity whatsoever.

Then would come their hilarious justifications, and excuses for this in the media afterwards.
