If we're being realistic and honest here, if it was one of our own players, a lot of our fans would have a laugh about it at first and then be supportive as long as the player was performing on the pitch. If they started putting in a few bad performances the homophobic insults would increase. Any player that came out would get constant abuse from opposition fans and I reckon our fans would be up there with the worst, especially if the opposition player played for Liverpool.
I don't think it's the correct audience to "come out to". A lot of football fans are absolute ****houses and would exploit the information and situation. I would respect anyone who did come out as long as we didn't hear about details of their private life. As Davek said, why would we want to know what they get up to off the pitch? I think football is one of those areas in life where the majority are well behind the times with this. And in fairness, football always has been a "mans" game and gay men don't fit in to that image, whether we like it or not.
