What if an Everton player came out?

So you believe gay people should be open and tell everyone they are gay? Why? For what purpose? Is it any of your business?

I think your attitude is medieval mate sorry.

I think you're bending the argument into something I'm not talking about. It's got nothing to do with individuals - it's everything to do with attitudes within the game.

Whilst in theory I do support the view that sexuality is none of anyone elses business, and that 'coming out' shouldn't really be neccessary.

Does the whole celebrity thing attached to football where Hello or the Daily Mail go into footballers social lives more than their athletic lives change that? Even if a player, certainly a top flight one, hadn't officially revealed his sexuality, it seems unlikely that it could be hidden from the invasive lens of the press for long?

what defines coming out? if a player gets asked in an interview what celebs they fancy or whatever and they say a man, are they 'coming out' and trying to get attention? because thats prob how it would be portrayed

the first player to come out will probably not want to but will do it cos some scumbag paper like the sun or star is gonna splash it all over their front page.

they can do whatever they want either come out or keep quiet it doesnt bother me either way. i'll support the team and individuals in the team for their performances on the pitch and thats all i care about.

Its when they play crap that you would hear idiots shout stuff. Im guessing we all had to hear some idiot call Anichebe a "useless black *******" or similar when he was shinning it into touch, but the same people would cheer him when he scored.

People are ignorant and will latch onto anything they can when they abuse soemone

If we're being realistic and honest here, if it was one of our own players, a lot of our fans would have a laugh about it at first and then be supportive as long as the player was performing on the pitch. If they started putting in a few bad performances the homophobic insults would increase. Any player that came out would get constant abuse from opposition fans and I reckon our fans would be up there with the worst, especially if the opposition player played for Liverpool.

I don't think it's the correct audience to "come out to". A lot of football fans are absolute ****houses and would exploit the information and situation. I would respect anyone who did come out as long as we didn't hear about details of their private life. As Davek said, why would we want to know what they get up to off the pitch? I think football is one of those areas in life where the majority are well behind the times with this. And in fairness, football always has been a "mans" game and gay men don't fit in to that image, whether we like it or not.

I just don't think Homosexuality will ever be accepted as those involved want, it isn't something new many ancient civilisations indulged openly but nowhere has it evolved becoming accepted as Hetero wanging.

Unless evangelical about such matters why put yourself up for comment and likely ridicule, the reticence of major sports figures to come out is understandable imo.

What Davek said.

Just like I don't care about their WAGS and whatever other sh1te they get up to, I don't particularly care to know what their sexual orientation is. If they want to come out then great, if not then great also. So long as they conduct themselves in a decent manner on and off the field, who really cares?
