What if an Everton player came out?

I think Davek is diverting the OP question somewhat.

Rather view it as the media discovering that one of our players is gay. He's kept it to himself this entire time. But the media outed him. The media attention forces him to respond to it. He confirms that his sexual preference is men and leaves it at that- asks for privacy...
NOW, what is the response from EFC fans?

Personally I'd like to think none would behave differently towards him.
No doubt within the changing rooms there'd be some banter and harmless teasing. But there'll also possibly be some idiots (in playing and coaching staff, home and away fans) who act disgustingly towards the player towards them for being gay.

I'd very much like any EFC player who was gay and feels like they're trapped and hiding themselves to come out and be comfortbale.

Why do they want to come out anyway? Their business. They're there to play football. I dont want to know what they get up to outside of that.
This, and who cares anyway?
Theban Lovers Brigade at the back might be useful, but we don't need to know about it imo.

They don't have to, but if they did then that's completely fine.
Gay or straight though it'd be annoying if you used your sexuality as a way to get attention.

Anything where you mock somebody's sexuality is far from harmless mate. It's attitudes like that which need changing, just like 'casual racism'.

No wonder they don't come out, all the media outlets have been all over the Tom Daly confession instead of not making a big deal about it.

This is the nub of it.

Tom Daly is in a gay relationship, fine, good for him.

The fact that it is front page news and all over the TV says that as a nation we haven't accepted it as 'normal' though doesn't it. Why would anyone care ? I don't, but clearly lots of people do otherwise it wouldn't be on teh front page of even seemingly intellectual papers such as the Guardian / Independent etc.

I find it all a bit odd.

Wouldn't be bothered at all. None of my business.

As for why people come out - in Tom Daley's case, it might have been he got wind that a newspaper was going to 'expose' him and he thought 'I'll take the wind out of their sails' and did it himself.

i didn't say mocking.
harmless teasing is what i said.
now i don't condone it- what i said is its bound to happen. in professional football where absolutely no top player has come out as gay the environment is one where it simply will not be ignored quietly.
That's why the media is pouncing on Daley's announcement. Because it is currently news. And until the taboo is eliminated it will remain news. That can't happen immediately. The first of the gay footballers will be written about over and over and over again. its unavoidable. My suggestion was that I would hope in EFC's coaching and playing staff it would be handled in a way that is delicate but more importantly- quite casually. as casually as the people here on GOT who say they simply don't care. Not caring isn't AVOIDING the fact. It's continuing relationships with the knowledge of said fact.

The ideal for most of those who don't have some religious or political aversion to homosexuality is that sexual preference does not carry a disproportionate weight of importance - that there is complete equality between a gay individual and a straight, a bisexual and an asexual. That's not to say that there should be some pretence that sexuality doesn't play a big role in an individual's identity, just that there's no place for moral judgement or corrosive ridicule in the conversation.

It's odd that out of, what, about 600 players in the Premier League, there are none that are known to be gay. It would be nice to think that the reason for this is a complete indifference to anyone's sexuality but the reality is almost certainly that some gay men feel the need to hide or repress the truth because of their profession. And it's also true that there is a social default assumption that, unless told otherwise, people are straight. That's why I think it would be a genuinely positive and progressive step for homosexual players to come out publically. It might mean that the first few people to state it openly receive some unnecessary attention (an unenviable thing, for sure), but it would hopefully mean that future generations don't. As long as it’s not discussed it will always remain a big deal to some, and the environment that we have to cultivate is one where a person never feels like their sexuality is an issue. Ironically, it has to become an issue before it becomes commonplace, just like female equality and racial equality.

To answer the OP, I would care - I'd be proud if an Everton player had the confidence to come out, and I’m certain the club and the fans would react appropriately, which would be to support the player and not make a big deal out of it.

So you believe gay people should be open and tell everyone they are gay? Why? For what purpose? Is it any of your business?

I think your attitude is medieval mate sorry.

I understand where you come from, but its more a case that gay footballers have to actively keep their sexuality a secret. If they want a relationship or even get married then it all has to be hidden from the world for fear of the abuse that they would receive in the workplace. That is not right.

I suspect a lot of pantomime Bantz from other sides fans. A lot of Meh from us and a container ship full of cash from sponsore etc trying to jump on his bandwagon

Don't really see it as any of our business to be honest. Not interested in the slightest either.

Can completely understand why they wouldn't come out though because it would make them easy targets for the idiots, and there will always be idiots. I think it's unfair for people to put pressure on them to come out as well.
