What do pre-season results really tell us?

  • nowt, results are irrelevant as they're just glorified training sessions

  • how good we are, a decent win or two can bring positive vibes all round

  • depends if there's cheese on toast at half-time

People need to wake up and smell the coffee!
The minimum requirement is a centre half and centre forward otherwise we will struggle - did you see the Richarleson’s face at the end of the game in France? He’s probably amazed how bad we actually are - people can say many of them won’t be in the starting 11 but those days have gone. You need at least 18 players good enough to be in 1st 11 - we’ve got about 5! Lets hope signings are imminent.

that rennes defeat was with a fairly strong line up

even the blackburn defeat we still had a strong line up second half and still lost the second half

the likes of man city, liverpool and utd are mainly playing youth players and still get good results

city had 6 teenagers against bayern munich and beat them

The preseason is a warning of what is to come and the worry is not about fitness.

The preseason is a mirror of how we played most of last season, that is why I am personally worried.

Not only did we ship goals for fun the most part, but now we have been found out (!) not one team is going to be worried about playing us!

We can play our first team squad or the kids, both show an alarming lack of quality needed for the Premiership.

So when lads* call out the knee jerkers and tell everybody to relax because it's just a friendly...
It isn't going to get better without new signings.

*This group of lads also vanish after the 6th or 7th defeat in the first 14 games.

The most important thing from pre-season is building up fitness. Of course, you want to see some cohesion in the later games, and proof that patters of play are being established. But it all is secondary to fitness, at least until the last couple of pre-season games, then you want to see some cohesion and understanding being built. Often teams in pre-season will train harder on game days too, so by the time they play, some will be heavy legged.

Results can be screwed of course too, example being our game vs Liverpool in the USA. To say it falttered us is an understatment. We where 2nd best for all apatt from about 15 mins of this game. But that is a perfect example of why we shouldn't take too much from a scoreline. It doesn't always reflect the game of course.

Plus you guys like us are also working things out with a new coach, which is always difficult when done in the public glare.

Well, we had better sort soemthing out because I will need to see at least a few entertaining games to sugar coat the bitterest pill that the shagite are going to walk the league this season! I know City are a better side on paper, but the RS are supported by Satan himself and having sorted their last remaining weak link by signing. Akeeper, i honestly think they will do it :( if i have to suffer that on top of watching our lot void themselves everytime a ball is kicked toward them, i am not sure i am strong enough to bear the pain!
