Fed off the buzz of winning and the fans pushing for three points every game first season. Thereafter when it became a struggle to get results he stood and watched - frozen with fear and unable to act.

Lost his nerve in the end. Coaches the right way though, and he'll underline it again at Belgium when he'll at least have some stand up men in the defence instead of the church mice he had here.

I seem to remember similar sentiment with Moyes as well and him becoming more conservative as he went on. I suspect both Moyes/Martinez trusted players who had performed for them too much.

I don't think Koeman will fall into that trap as much. If I'm honest I'll be surprised if Koeman is here much beyond 2 years, for better or worse.

I agree.

On the point about boldness: new managers do this and then become more cautious. It's natural they'll make a lot of sudden changes initially given their lack of knowledge of the squad and the fact that being new allows you to break a few eggs as it were without getting a bollocking.

Yes. I don't remember it applying to Smith much but Moyes and Martinez there was a boldness there initially. I think Koeman is probably even bolder than Martinez but that does have to be balanced against him never staying at a club longer than 3 years. Whatever people want to say about Moyes/Martinez they tended to look to manage in the longer term which sometimes means not breaking teams up as quickly.

The other important factor is that the support at board level, even if we take the most sceptical analysis of it is now far beyond what either enjoyed. If Koeman annoys some star players who want to go we know we can reject the value and even if they go we can go and attract 2/3 quality players in their position if they are to go as well as being able to poach said replacements from Premier league teams. That does give an inevitable confidence to the manager to pursue his goals more confidently.

This was not what Moyes/Martinez operated under for most years, who deep down knew they had to keep their star players for if they were sold they were always worrying the money may disappear on lawnmowers, or they may have to accept 3rd/4th/5th choice. The concessions made had to lead to a different form of management.

None of this is meant as a critique but as always there does need to be some balance. Overall we are in a far healthier position now and we have a very good manager for what we now need. I think we can see Evertonians will be happy now, which is the most important thing for me.

However foundations were laid by Moyes who allowed his pessimism to overcome him at the end. Martinez at the start ave a number of young players a chance but probably failed for having too much trust. Koeman is now a great fit but is building on some of the good aspects both gave us.

Surely that was his fault.

I think that's going to be an enormous difference what you say about a manager flush with cash and not putting up with a load of prima doña bottlers. He has the ability to manage with no worries in that respect. Moyes and Martinez always had to look to get players on side certainly Moyes was read the riot act in his second season here! and Martinez had to out up with players not arsed about turning up toward the end of his time here.

Yea he doesn't strike me as a guy who would be scared to make enemies and that's not going to make it easy for him in the long term.

Take the win and 4 points so far as we are rebuilding on the run.
Two goals conceded though this season from headers from a cross and a corner. Still a concern that needs fixing. Still no clean sheets, that needs fixing.
Sitters missed to seal the win. Needs fixing.
Encouraging, but plenty of things still to address, and, 3 or 4 new quality footballers required in the outfield.

I just watched the 20min highlights and although it wasn't the whole game from what I saw Funes Mori is a terrible defender who makes mistakes regularly which create goal scoring opportunities for the opposition!
Lucky the keeper was on his game!
Sell Mori! Sell now!

Great Win Today!

Some Positives:
Mason Holgate with a MOTM performance. Think Koeman likes this lad.
Great subs by Koeman. Lukaku on in the first half for Mcarthy changed the game.
Bolasie had a very good debut. Could of/should of had two assists.
Stekelenburg continues to impress, made one particularly vital save.

Some Negatives:
Deulofeu playing the CF role against grocky defensive teams like WBA just isn't gonna work. Koeman should of perhaps predicted this.
I'm still not entirely sure what Barkleys best role is. Still love him though.
We need to kill off teams and put away these big chances (rom and barkley). At 2-1 up, it felt like WBA were still in it right til the whistle.

Tbf I could of wrote more positives and the negatives are relatively minor. The second half was particularly boss! :pint2:
